Gracie?

We couldn't use Grace as it jars horribly with our surname, but Gracie goes quite well and I love it. I'm not a fan of nicknames as names, but I've found Gracie in the top 500 names of the 1880s and 1890s so using it as a first name isn't new and it goes really well with my DDs name. I worry that it doesn't sound serious, but it doesn't seem that different to Katie to me and she could always use her middle name.

We're not pregnant yet, so this is very early planning, but last time we had all our names worked out before starting ttc, so I thought I'd ask for opinions!

I have a Gracie. She's registered as Grace though so when she's older, she has the choice, as Gracie seems a little bit girlie. I much prefer Gracie to Grace.
The only issues I've encountered are people calling her Grace (DSis I'm looking at you) when she's never ever been called Grace (except legally). Also she's a bit of a tomboy/stomps around/suits jeans rather than dresses, so I'm not exactly sure she'll ever be a graceful Gracie. My phone autocorrects it to Gravie. Every. Damn. Time. Other than that, I love the name!

Love it!

Thank you for the responses. If they're anything like me non of my children will be graceful!

I was thinking the other way round, that she could be officially Gracie but could use Grace as a professional name when older (we have a double barrelled surname, DHs family have had the name since the 1800s, and Grace would go with the second part and make a very professional sounding name, but it doesn't go with the whole name). I just don't know!

Lovely name. I really like it.

mygrandchildrenrock · 01/03/2015 16:01

There is a Gracie at my school who is just Gracie, not Grace. It is a lovely name and she's a lovely little girl.

tuffgingernut · 01/03/2015 18:04

It's beautiful. Of course I'm biased as I have a 2 week old Gracie who is officially Grace but always introduced and known as Gracie. If you like it, go for it!

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/03/2015 18:13

I really like it as a nn, but I'd have to put Grace on the bc because I just can't imagine it suiting an adult woman.

MrsGSR · 02/03/2015 18:07

Thank you for your thoughts :)

I'm taking myself round to the idea though, I'm thinking they can use Grace if they want because it could be a nickname for Gracie. Not like eg putting Tony on the BC and then using Antony, if that makes sense!

Tbh, it wouldn't be my choice.

MaloryArcher · 02/03/2015 20:51

Love Gracie.

Hate Grace.

Go figure.

HearTheThunderRoar · 03/03/2015 08:03

Gracie as an awesome name! Its my 15 year old DD's name, Gracie, not Grace. I honestly don't see a problem with names ending in 'ie'.

drivinmecrazy · 03/03/2015 08:38

I have a 14yo Grace. she was known as Gracie till she was 10, & made it clear that she was to be called Grace. only her little sister & Grandma are allowed to call her Gracie now. We are very lucky, she is extremely graceful & a dancer so suits her name perfectly. it would have been awful had she turned into a clumsy heffalump Grin Grin

squoosh · 03/03/2015 11:12

I can't really imagine a grown woman being called Gracie. To me it seems far more of a nickname type name than something like Kate for example.

squoosh · 03/03/2015 11:13

And for some reason I have an urge to pronounce it in a Liverpool accent. No idea why though!

MrsGSR · 03/03/2015 13:35

I'm so torn! I have a friend called Jessie, which realy suits her even as an adult. I really can't decide!

You could swich family names? Grace (father's name) (mother's name)
instead of the reverse?

MrsGSR · 03/03/2015 20:45

Our surname isn't made up of our names. The full story is long and would out me, basically DHs family emigrated to Britain in the 1800s and experienced prejudice due to their surname, so added the first part to sound more British.

I'd rather just choose a different name than lose the history. Plus I want Mae as a middle name (family connection on my side) and I don't think that goes with Grace either.
