Rufus and William Rufus

I am 34 weeks pregnant with DS2. When DS1 was born we had 3 name possibilities: Samuel, Rufus and William. We chose Samuel and are happy with that. But now we have to choose again. DH quite likes Charlie now, I love Rufus and DH likes it but we've had a lot of negative comments that I think have really put him off. William is the compromise candidate we both quite like but we have agreed we think it's a bit too popular. DH has now said firmly that he wants to call him William Rufus but that's the name of a Norman king who isn't a great role model! What name combo should we go for? It's driving me mad!

I don't think the average person in the street will be too clued up on their Norman monarchy, so I think William Rufus will be fine Grin

Rufus is a lovely name - what sort of idiots are making negative comments? If you were calling him Thor-BJ I could understand it, but Rufus??

Bowlersarm · 28/02/2015 15:28

William Rufus is lovely. I haven't heard of the Norman king of which you speak!

If it's playing on your mind, put another middle name between them?

funnyossity · 28/02/2015 15:31

William Rufus was notorious.

But who outside of history buffs will know?

BossWitch · 28/02/2015 15:34

Rufus Doofus as a potential not-so-nice nickname springs to mind, plus it kind of screams dog name to me, but it's certainly not the worst I've heard on MN!

funnyossity · 28/02/2015 15:36

If you are Empress Matilda shouldn't you be having a Henry? Grin

scarletforya · 28/02/2015 15:43

Yeah, Rufus= woof.

Sophronia · 28/02/2015 15:49

I agree that Rufus sounds like a dog name. I love William though.

EmpressMatilda · 28/02/2015 15:53

I like Henry but DH doesn't. We had completely agreed on Matilda for a daughter but it never came to be.
At first I thought the Norman king didn't matter but most of my friends and family immediately mentioned him when we suggested names. I'm not so bothered about the person on the street's opinion/knowledge! Can't be taking that into account or we'd never choose!

The negative comments have ranged from 'dog's name' to 'snobby' to 'dirty old man'. I'm quite hurt to be honest as I think it's lovely.

I immediately thought of the king

Rufus is a lovely name and makes me think of Rufus Sewell.

EmpressMatilda · 28/02/2015 17:08

Rufus Sewell = Grin Grin

Rufus Sewell is mine, I'm afraid
