Martha

DH loves it, I am okay with it but not my favourite. But I got my own way (a family name) with dd 1 so am prepared to go with his choice if I don't dislike it. What do others think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I love all the posters who tell you that a name is about to explode in popularity when in fact it has already peaked and is on the wane. There are clear statistics for these things, there's a website called greenday or something like that which charts names' popularity. Martha has already peaked.

It's beautiful anyway. Often wish I'd used it but I wanted to keep my options open for a potential future Arthur!

poppydaisy · 27/02/2015 14:18

I would bet (quite a lot, actually) that Martha will continue to rise up the popularity charts.

shakemysilliesout · 27/02/2015 14:21

Awful

FunkyPeacock · 27/02/2015 14:25

I like it BUT I do think in years to come it will be one of those names that instantly pins you to being a particular age (eg. born between 2008 & 2018!) in the same way that you know the majority of Michelles/Lisas/Nicolas/Jennifers were born in the 1970s

CarlaVeloso · 27/02/2015 17:47

Is that a bad thing? Confused isn't it fairly obvious which decade you were born in...by looking at you?

CarlaVeloso · 27/02/2015 17:50

Or do you imagine all the Persephones and Byrons will float through life without anyone ever being able to "date them"?

FunkyPeacock · 27/02/2015 18:35

Haha - no wouldn't bother me in the slightest CarlaV and I am myself the owner of a nice 70s name but I know that lots of people don't like a name that is overly trendy or of the moment so was merely pointing it out!

As I said, I like the name x

FunkyPeacock · 27/02/2015 18:38

and I can assure you that my own DC have names which would sit far more comfortably with Martha than with Byron or Persiphone!

threepiecesuite · 27/02/2015 18:47

Love Martha. Only know one who is 4.
I love all 'th' names, such a nice soft sound, Faith, Beth, Thea, Nathan, Ethan, Arthur etc.

KatieKaye · 27/02/2015 18:58

Lovely name. As is Marta.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/02/2015 19:49

I think it is quite an ugly name, in all honesty.

Hippee · 27/02/2015 21:31

I have a 5 year old Martha. She has one friend called Martha but don't know any others the same age - just an 11 year old and a 40 year old. Don't care what other people think - just like it.

cowbiscuits · 27/02/2015 21:53

I used to love this name and it was my name of choice for DC#1 who turned out to be a boy. It's probably just as well he was a boy, because I think I have gone off Martha and I can't really explain why.

Maybe it just feels a bit clunky and not very pretty, but I thought it was pretty at the time. Or maybe I do still love it. I just don't know!

applecatchers36 · 27/02/2015 21:55

Very popular know lots

Roseotto · 01/03/2015 22:56

Used to make me think of handmaid's tale (the maids) - now just think of the Vineyard - quite like it.

Martha appears to be on the rise in England and Wales. I don't think it's as "of the moment" as Isla or Amelia, though.

aoife24 · 05/03/2015 18:23

It's quite simply lovely.

chrome100 · 06/03/2015 11:34

I was bullied by a Martha all the way through school so it has bad connotations for me!

squoosh · 06/03/2015 12:16

I like it. Mostly because of the heartbreakingly beautiful Tom Waits song.

cartoonsaveme · 06/03/2015 12:17

3 in our reception year and 3 in nursery class. Like it but v popular

hels71 · 06/03/2015 18:25

Lovely name. It's DD s middle name and the name of her friend at brownies.
