I don't think Idris really needs a nickname, but maybe Iddy/Idi.

nooyearnooname · 24/02/2015 09:53

I have a friend who was known as Iddy

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 24/02/2015 12:21

Riz or even Rhys/Rees?

aoife24 · 24/02/2015 12:24

Maybe let one naturally evolve.

ClementineAndCordelia · 24/02/2015 14:44

DH would like us to use 'Sid' which I think could work and I like alot, though my only worry would be that he would become 'Sid' all of the time , which would leave Idris a forgotten name just for the Birth Cert/ formalities . DH isn't keen on Iddy ( I quite like it) - maybe we could use Siddy / Sidi . What to do ?!

If you like Idris, call him Idris. Why would you deliberately choose a nickname then worry that people would use that instead of Idris? Confused

dementedpixie · 24/02/2015 18:17

I also think it's bizarre to choose a name and then try to think of nicknames. Why not just call them by their name?

ClementineAndCordelia · 24/02/2015 20:56

I know that we will want to shorten it - as we have with Daughter's name ( even though that's just 4 letters long) . I can't imagine not using a shortened version a lot of the time . Calling him Idris constantly would seem too formal to me. Maybe I've answered my own question in that we must decide between Idris and Sid or convince DH about Iddy .

I would not shorten Idris at all. It is a lovely name that is easily said/pronounced and just 2 syllables long.

I would not shorten Idris to Iddy - too close to Idiot imo and therefore too prone to potential teasing.

'Maybe let one naturally evolve' - never before heard on baby names boards!

caughtinthemoment · 24/02/2015 23:08

I really don't get the mumsnet obsession with thinking of nicknames before the baby is even born. Bizarre.

fizzycolagurlie · 25/02/2015 04:34

Apparently Idris Elba gets called 'Dris

?

byhec · 25/02/2015 04:39

I have a friend called idris and it is shortened to id

poppydaisy · 25/02/2015 12:47

Idris is a great name. I you like the name, use Idris! Why does it need to be shortened..?!

But agree that Iddy is not a good nickname - Idris is 100x times nicer!

shitebag · 25/02/2015 12:50

Could be Red for all you know, if you like the name go for it. Nicknames evolve through the years, if you want him to be called something different from his name then change the name.

PattyPenguin · 25/02/2015 18:34

Bit confused. Iddy isn't any shorter than Idris - they're both two syllables.

If it's Idris as a Welsh name, it comes from the elements 'udd' meaning 'lord' and 'rhys' meaning 'ardent, impulsive' (in the martial sense). So I would second Rhys / Rees as a shortened form. If you want a nickname of the short form, the traditional Welsh one is 'Rhysyn'.

If it's Idris as an Arabic name, I've no idea about shortened versions / nicknames.

BMO · 25/02/2015 18:35

I know lots of Idris's and they are all known as Idris - it's not a name that lends itself to shortening ime.

TremoloGreen · 25/02/2015 23:51

Idi? Like Idi Amin Shock

If it doesn't save on syllables, why bother?

DontDrinkandFacebook · 25/02/2015 23:52

Dris is much better than Idi. It just makes me think of Idi Amin. Shock

Limer · 25/02/2015 23:58

Cader?

ClementineAndCordelia · 26/02/2015 00:04

Thanks for your thoughts all . DH and I have reflected on the name and realised we ( sadly ) don't like it enough to use it in its full form all of the time . I think we've been after one syllable names all along and only just realised . Shame actually as I was quite excited to be using a Welsh name ( we're Welsh ) . It looks like DH will win the day with his no. 1 choice of Sid , which is growing on me . I might see if Idris can be a middle name and honour it somehow !

fizzycolagurlie · 26/02/2015 01:18

Sid is a fabulous name - good choice!

Grin

I know. Crazy idea, right?

ClementineAndCordelia · 25/05/2015 21:40

We have come full circle again and we're back to Idris with 2 weeks to go :)

umiaisha · 25/05/2015 22:07

Idris is lovely - can't get much shorther than that!
