We knew we were having a baby girl from the 20wk scan and started to think of a name. Short list from then has been Violet, Roisin, Olwen and Audrey with Roisin and Olwen as favourites. Our baby girl was born on Monday and that's when dh stated he wasn't sure - Olwen been to unusual and Roisin because he remembered the only person he knew with the name died tragically so its a bad omen. I think we should stick with our shortlist dh wants to start looking again the trouble is family ate trying to get involved.

Ignore everyone - close down all conversations about it with everyone except your DH. Tell people to refer to her as "Pixie" or "Bean" or whatever until you're ready.

You have six weeks. Use them. Don't rush it. Try things out, give yourselves a deadline. It really doesn't matter. I know several people who took the full six weeks to publicly name their baby.

And congratulations! My head was all over the place at 5 days. In a couple of weeks you'll see things a lot more clearly.

Littleturkish · 21/02/2015 01:35

Roisin is a beautiful name.

Orlaith is also very pretty- would you consider that? Grainne, Aoife and Caoimhe are also favourites of mine.

WrappedInABlankie · 21/02/2015 02:07

Take as long as you need! Even if it takes over 6 weeks The fines a maximum of £200 iirc

BlueStarsAtNight · 21/02/2015 08:04

TBH I would find it very hard to use Roisin after your DH has said that.

I think Olwen is lovely though (and I like Anwen too).
Do you not think she looks like a Violet or Audrey?

Definitely don't let family get involved, but if your DH isn't happy with the names you had picked then let him come up with some more to try out, you do both need to be happy with it. Congratulations by the way!

CarbeDiem · 21/02/2015 08:32

FWIW - I think Violet is lovely.
Ignore family. It needs to be a name that you, Dh and hopefully baby dd are happy with.

Koalafications · 21/02/2015 08:36

Violet is lovely, does she look like a Violet?

Congratulations on your DD Flowers

diddl · 21/02/2015 09:19

I like Violet the best.

Gwen?

Jannywannywoohoo · 21/02/2015 09:43

Rhian

Artandco · 21/02/2015 09:48

Rosa?

myotherusernameisbetter · 21/02/2015 15:34

Audra instead of Audrey?
Adele
Viola instead of Violet?

juneau · 21/02/2015 15:39

Olwen is a bit weird, if you're looking for opinions, and I'm never sure how to pronounce Roisin. Is it Rosheen?

I like Celtic names, but if you're going to live in England I'd probably go with something that most people will know how to pronounce and spell. I can't imagine how irritating it would be to have to constantly correct people. I have a relatively easy name to spell and still people butcher it when writing it down. Its sooooo tedious. They do, however, know how to say it, which is something Grin

Take a good look at her. Try out some names on her. Something will stick. And you have six weeks - so don't stress and tell your families to piss off.

corgiology · 21/02/2015 19:33

I think Roisin will get a few raisin comments.

RatMort · 21/02/2015 19:39

Why would you think that, Corgiology?

OP, take your time. Our son was at least a fortnight old before we named him. There's no mad rush. It's not like he needs a name to distinguish him from all the other newborns you have under your roof...

helensburgh · 21/02/2015 19:45

Agree with the others, don't think about it, if you can and the right name will appear.

itssangriaoclock · 21/02/2015 19:47

I agree with dh if Roisin holds bad memories then it's a bad idea.

How do you pronounce Olwen?

Take your time, she is your baby you need to love her name and be proud to announce it.

Congratulations

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2015 21:14

Congratulations.

Violet and Audrey both nice.

CrispyFern · 21/02/2015 21:28

What's wrong with Violet and Audrey then, if DH doesn't want the other two from the shortlist?

CrispyFern · 21/02/2015 21:29

I like all four incidentally!

Andcake · 21/02/2015 21:30

Agree with dh not to use a 'jinxed' name.
But olwen is lovely.
I find it really annoying when people ( I have family who do this) don't name baby straight away but really take your time. But if you were in my family I wouldn't ask or try and get involved - just moan at DP about the lack of a name - what have they been doing for 9 months kind if way! Especially if one knows the sex too!

Blahia · 21/02/2015 21:33

At five days post partum I was an emotional wreck crying over nothing, not knowing what to do with myself! We had luckily already decided on a name, but I think you should take your time, consider new names if that's what your partner feels, but at the same time ask him to stay open to your short list too... You'll figure it out. And tell your family you want to make this decision on your own without any inputs from them!

And last but not least: CONGRATULATIONS!! X

Hassled · 21/02/2015 21:35

I do love Roisin. Violet is great - have you written that off?

HSMMaCM · 21/02/2015 21:39

I took nearly the full six weeks and even got a call from the registry office before settling on DD's name.

Strictly1 · 21/02/2015 21:42

Congratulations.

I love violet. Verona?

mathanxiety · 21/02/2015 21:50

You and DH need to just smile and nod and avoid getting in conversation with relatives.

Try to see what sounds you like from the names you had in mind earlier?

Would Molly be as nice as Olwen? Or how about Rowen if you like the -wen ending? Or Elowen?
Rosaleen or Rosalie be good subs for Roisin? Or Rosina?
Violet -- could you agree on that, or how about names like Felicity with the T sound or Hazel with the nature theme? Or Olivia with almost the same letters?
Audrey another nice name (imo): could you agree on that? Or other names with an EE ending Elodie? Or Sophie, Natalie, Emily, Carrie, Cecily, Nancy...

Or start afresh with a list of 20 names each and each of you gets to veto five names from the other's list and dismiss ten you just don't like.

Blahia · 21/02/2015 22:01

Wauw, great post, mathanxiety! All great advice!
