DC2's surname

CaptainCunt · 19/02/2015 12:13

DC1 has my surname, and DH's surname as a second middle name. DH wants DC2 to be vice versa which is fair enough.

Would it be too weird for (full) siblings to have different surnames? At this point I'd rather double barrel both of them but DH thinks that's too long and doesn't go. I think it sounds ok but they're quite similar names. Or not double barrel and just have two surnames each?

My surname's not actually Cunt or we would have gone with DH's name from the beginning.

Ha ha Grin

Nor weird exactly but people might assume theyre step/half brothers and personally I'd like them to have the same name.

I'd use your Dh's name as mn for your second dc as well. This is (almost) the Scottish tradition. E.g. My Dp and his sister both have their mother's maiden name as a "middle name". It is blatantly a surname but they insist that it's a middle name not a double barreled surname and that because it is a Scottish tradition it doesn't imply that they're "posh" Hmm

I know of people who have done this. I guess they do occasionally have to explain, but you can take it in your stride. I am named just like your kids & once or twice I remember explaining that my dad wasn't my stepdad, but it's not a big deal. Do what feels right to you.

Personally I would want my children to have the same surname. I think I would either do the same again, with your surname and then have DH's as a middle name, or else double barrel them both. There's no right answer though.

I do think people might assume they were half brother/sister. I know loads of double barrelled names that don't exactly 'go'. Doesn't matter at all. It's just a name.
E.g. Shaun Wright-Philips, Craig Revel-Horwood
Don't sound perfect but don't sound wrong

silverbirdie is your name from The Trial of Anna Cotman?

SilverBirdie · 22/02/2015 22:44

Nope bullseye
More to do with a favourite accessory. Good book?

bullseyebraces · 23/02/2015 11:52

It is a good book, yes. Probably right for late primary age kids.

Sorry for de-rail, OP!

shakemysilliesout · 23/02/2015 13:20

I think they should have the same surname.

But I can't think of an ideal solution.

I'm anti double barrell not because it can sound awkward but because it stores up trouble. If your dc is a boy then it's hard for his future wife to triple barrel. If dc is a girl then it's also hard to triple barrel. Just musings really- no solution sorry!

I don’t think double barreling ‘stores up trouble’, what a silly notion. It gives options that’s all. His future wife might choose to keep her own name (!), take his double barreled name, add one part of his name to her own.
