Sorell, Sorrell, Sorrel or Sorrelle

I can't work out the best spelling. We are a nicknamey kind of family, so I could see Elle being used, so I like the idea of a double ll. But my googling so far suggests that might not be 'proper'.

What do you think?

Use the real spelling of the herb - Sorrel. The others are utterly illiterate. IMO.

BMO · 15/02/2015 09:26

I'd go with the standard spelling of the plant Sorrel rather than a slight misspelling.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 15/02/2015 09:27

Standard spelling here too.

ooerrmissus · 15/02/2015 09:38

Sorrel. The others look like types of contraception.

MrsLettuce · 15/02/2015 09:41

Yes, Sorrel.
There's no reason why she couldn't be nicknamed Elle with the proper spelling.

DishwasherDogs · 15/02/2015 09:42

Sorrel.

BikeRunSki · 15/02/2015 09:45

If you are going to use a name which is also a word, you really need to stick to the same spelling as the word, so Sorrel.

My DNiece is Eleanor, nn Ellie. No probs with double L.

Velvetbee · 15/02/2015 09:46

Sorrel.

Yes, Sorrel. I agree the others look like contraception!

Although then you wouldn't really have the 'elle' sound to create the nickname would you? I say 'Sorrel' soh-rul. Maybe I say it wrong!

johendy · 15/02/2015 11:34

Well that's sorted then. Sorrel. Is it soh-rul, not soh-rel then? Rats...

Prn here

BlueStarsAtNight · 15/02/2015 12:57

Yep, the emphasis is on the 'soh'

Educateme · 15/02/2015 12:58

Yes, 'rul'. There are lots of names with an Elle sound, though.

Joelle
Estelle
Michelle

Sorrel.
I think it is a lovely name but I have a very positive association with it.

sticklebrickstickle · 15/02/2015 13:20

I think if you want her to be called soh-rel then go for the spelling Sorelle. I guess it would kind of fall into the category of 'made up name' but I think it's lovely (and nicer than Sorrel) and would work. It's not too out there!

If you want the standard pronunciation I agree with standard spelling, Sorrel.

Sophronia · 15/02/2015 13:37

I think Sorrel rhymes with Coral.

Artandco · 15/02/2015 13:38

Sorrel. However I know one and it always sounds like 'sorrow' when most people say it which isn't great
