Which spelling would you go for?

And I've assumed they'd all be pronounced the same - if you think they wouldn't, please let me know.

I would pronounce Ada and Ayda the same, and prefer the first spelling.

Given that not every keyboard copes with accents, I'd assume that Aida was the same name as the opera, and would pronounce it the traditional way as Ay-ee-da.

MyNameIsSuz · 14/02/2015 09:15

I'd also assume Aida was pronounced differently, either ay-ee-da or perhaps eye-da, since 'ai' makes an 'eye' sound. I'd go with Ads if that's the sound you want.

MyNameIsSuz · 14/02/2015 09:16

Ada I mean!

Kundry · 14/02/2015 09:18

I'd pronounce Aida as Ai-ee-da like the opera. Aida is a great character but she does end up buried alive.

Kundry · 14/02/2015 09:18

Oh, and I'd assume you were into opera.

Hakluyt · 14/02/2015 09:24

Ada is pronounced Ay-da.
Aida -I-ee-da.
Ayda- I don't know because I have never seen it before, but I would go for the same as Ada- for obvious reasons!

Hakluyt · 14/02/2015 09:27

And I think if you use Aida and pronounce it Ada, people will assume you've never heard of a very well known opera.....

wesH · 14/02/2015 09:29

Ada. Aida is fine, but don't use ayda - you'll sound like a stereotypical white suburban american parent trying to make their little one sound 'special' by chucking unnecessary Ys into a fairly average name

trainersandcake · 14/02/2015 09:38

Robbie Williams' wife is called Ayda and pronounces it Ida.

I like them (Aida less so as I'd just think of the opera!)

Belazu84 · 14/02/2015 13:23

Ada- like it

johendy · 14/02/2015 13:32

Ahhh thanks. I have zero knowledge of opera and want to avoid unnecessarily 'jazzing' up a name with unique spelling so if we go this way, it'll be Ada.
It's just so short though, for some reason that bugs me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/02/2015 15:19

I'd go with Ada, for ease.

Ada

Keep it simple

ScaryChicken · 14/02/2015 20:42

Or, if you'd like something longer there's Adelaide

fishfingerSarnies · 14/02/2015 20:53

Love Ada it was on my list untill I found out I was having a boy.

Sophronia · 14/02/2015 22:19

Definitely Ada - lovely name.

Blahia · 15/02/2015 03:53

Aida is my favourite, but u too would pronounce it Ay-EE-da.

Don't like Ayda, and if I saw Ada on paper, I would maybe think it was pronounced 'Adda'.

If you like the pronunciation EYE-da, why not go for the classic Ida?

LabelsMustFaceOut · 17/02/2015 13:41

Ada was our top girl choice until I heard DH yell out "f**king Ada!!" whilst getting frustrated with his bike. It's a bit of a saying round these parts, apparently!

We went with something else after that.

Hello,
My name is Aida and I am currently enrolled at the Bowlby Centre, training as an attachment- based psychoanalyst Psychotherapist and I am based in Woodford ( East London ).
As part of my training I am required to undertake a year and half long Infant observation .

The purpose of this observation is to gain a more in-depth understanding of a baby's typical development during the first year of life, as this is when key stages in emotional, mental and physical growth occur. By taking an active role in the early childhood education process, parents can help ensure that their child has all the support they need to develop to their full potential.

Usually infant observation are face to face within the family/home/nursery but precautions against Covid have led to the observations being conducted online via Zoom for an hour a week .

I am currently looking for a suitable family that might be interested in taking part in the study .I would be very grateful if you or anyone you know might be interested could contact me
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me through mumsnet or via email me at: [email protected]
Thanks

Aida is too similar to Aids. I wouldn't use it.

I like Ada, we had a children's alphabet book with a character Ada the Aligator.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 23/01/2021 16:19

I'd also said Aida differently.

Prefer Ada to Ayda.

Zombie thread from 2015

RuthW · 23/01/2021 18:51

I would pronounce Ada and Aida the same (like the fabric with holes in - Aida).
Ayda I would say Eye-da
