Charles or Charlie on birth certificate ?

One of the names we really like is Charlie but my husband is insisting he should be Charles on the birth certificate. I love Charlie but don't like Charles really. What are your thoughts, should I have the full name on the birth certificate or choose another name entirely ?

Go for Charles, nothing will stop him using charlie if he wants to but in certain situations he might want to have a more formal name.

I'm with your dh, our dd is Pippa but Phillipa on her birth certificate at my dh's insistence. I never used to like Phillipa but it's grown on me.

MamaLazarou · 10/02/2015 21:16

Charles. Otherwise he'll be a proper Charlie.

Wassat · 10/02/2015 21:17

Charles, definitely

Chatty987 · 10/02/2015 21:18

Charles on BC

Freezingmyarseoff · 10/02/2015 21:19

Hmm, well we put Charlie on DS' birth certificate for the exact reasons you say. I'm slightly regretting it now but hey ho. I suppose he can call himself Charles if he wants a more formal name at times.

TazTheFairy · 10/02/2015 21:25

My son is registered Charlie. I hate the name Charles so it wasn't an option.

DramaAlpaca · 10/02/2015 21:27

I'd go with Charles on the BC.

Peachy27 · 10/02/2015 21:44

I've never got this. If he's going to be known as Charlie, call him Charlie. If he's going to be Charles, call him Charles. Used to get this when I did the register when supply teaching. Good morning Alfonso. No response as Alfie didn't know who it was. There will be nothing stopping him calling himself Charles ( or anything else!) when he's older if he so chooses.

nooka · 10/02/2015 21:56

I'd go for Charles to give your child flexibility as he grows up. You may always call him Charlie, but he might prefer something more formal when he gets older.

My children have more formal names on their birth certificates but are mostly known by their diminutives. When we have registered them for school they have always asked what we wanted them to be called (usually a space for 'known as'). At primary I liked their reports etc to be in their full names, when we changed schools later on they both opted for their diminutives to go on the school records and now at secondary ds has stayed with the diminutive but dd has gone back to her full name (there are a few other children with the short form but none with the longer one).

Charles

Koalafications · 10/02/2015 22:02

Charles on the BC.

I'm not keen on nicknames being on the BC.

Bowlersarm · 10/02/2015 22:03

Charles

Justmuddlingalong · 10/02/2015 22:08

My DS2 is called Charlie, therefore the registered name on his birth certificate is Charlie.

bienemaya · 10/02/2015 22:08

I suggest you choose another name altogether if you don't like Charles. To me Charles and Charlie are the same name, the latter being the nickname, but I think most people will assume that a Charlie is a Charles anyway.

MintChocAddict · 10/02/2015 22:09

Go with Charlie on the BC. Why would you put a name on the certificate that you're never going to address him by. Confused Think that's v odd.

This seems to be a particularly strange Mumsnet thing. 'You can't put a shortened name on a birth certificate. What if he becomes a barrister/Prime Minister/high court judge' -delete as appropriate. Hmm.

Would be OK if he was going to be a brickie or a plumber though. Wink

He can call himself what he blimmin well likes when he's older (including Charles if he so wishes) and a piece of paper won't make any difference.

Sophronia · 10/02/2015 22:13

Charles on the BC.

whatsagoodusername · 10/02/2015 22:16

Charles on the BC.

Hulababy · 10/02/2015 22:17

I would put Charles on the BC as Charlie seems like a nickname rather than a full name. It also officially allows the child more formal options when older.

My godson is Charles on the form and mostly Charlie in every day life, including at school, etc.

BlueStarsAtNight · 10/02/2015 22:38

I'd also go with Charles

Shil0846 · 10/02/2015 22:43

Vote for Charles here too Smile

LeSaor · 10/02/2015 23:25

I dunno why but I can't picture calling someone Charles, they almost always have a nickname right, so may as well go with that? Or maybe I'm just revealing my class/social circle here :D

Princesspond · 10/02/2015 23:38

Like you, I actually dislike the name Charles so went for Charlie as that was the name I wanted. Pointless to put a name on bc that we didn't like and were never going to use. Somebody made that 'he's a right Charlie' comment to me as a reason against Hmm.

Charles definitely. I really dislike the modern trend I'm a traditionalist of having shortened versions of names on BC. Alfie, Archie, charlie etc etc love the names as everyday use names but I like it to be 'proper' on the BC
