Spelling of Name

Hi,
Just a quick question - we've decided on Edith as a girls name which will be shortened to Edie. Slightly worried she'll always be called Eddie though. Best to stick with traditional spelling or would Eidith / Eidie be a better option to prevent this?
Thx x

I know an Eadie

Still to the traditional spelling. People will call her what you introduce her as. If they only see it written down, she just had to correct them once and hopefully that will be that Smile. I imagine she'll use Edith on most written documents though.

Hobby2014 · 10/02/2015 09:17

I want to use Edith if I ever have a girl.
We would use Edith spelling and nn would be pronounced Eee-dee. I'd go for Edie or Eedie spelling as nn I think although not sure how often a nn needs writing vs full name, unless she'll never be called Edith & that's just for birth certificate?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/02/2015 09:23

It's spelt Edie & I really don't think people will mispronounce that as Eddie. Also, how often will people see her nn written down (and therefore need to work out how to pronounce it) anyway?

It would generally be Edith written down, with Edie being what you actually call her wouldn't it?

Please don't be tempted to spell her name wrong. It will always just look "wrong" & end up causing more confusion in the long run.

TBH if I saw Eidith I'd probably assume it was meant to be pronounced 'ay-dith'. I'd think that you must have spelt it differently because the pronunciation was different to the norm. Definitely go Edith/Edie.

Blahia · 10/02/2015 09:47

Go with the traditional Edith/ Edie, don't think anyone will pronounce it Eddie?!

If you spell it differently you/ she will have to spell it to people her entire life.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 10/02/2015 09:52

I would assume Eidith was Ay-dith too. Unless the person was from a non-English ethnic background, when I might wonder if it was an Edith spelling I wasn't familiar with. Are those variants which exist, or are you creating them?

Go with Edith. If you want, she can spell the nickname Eadie, but there's no need to mess with the spelling of a lovely name.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 10/02/2015 09:53

ps. You do realise that, when she is a teen, she may want the nickname Eddie, in the same vein as Charlie, etc. You can't control nicknames really!

JulyOrAugustThatIsTheQuestion · 10/02/2015 10:12

Thanks all!!
Eidith/Eidie is a variant listed when I've looked up the name but Edith I prefer, I just didn't want her to have to be called Eddie all the time in error. However, as many have mentioned and I'd stupidly not thought of that actually Edie won't be written down very much. That's unless she chooses to go solely by Edie (or even Eddie) when she's older, but I guess that'll be her problem then if she's incorrectly called Eddie Wink

Definately go with the traditional spelling - can't see many people getting it wrong as it's a well established nn. If they do say Eddie just correct them. I would also think Eidith was pronounced 'Aydith' but I'm in Scotland so names like Eilidh and Eileen are more common.

isthisjustfantasy · 10/02/2015 11:54

I think you are overcomplicating things. Not many people would pronounce Edie as Eddie. It's a common shortening of Edith.

pinkgirlythoughts · 11/02/2015 10:09

I also know an Eadie.

I remember some minor celeb calling their daughter Edie a few years ago (can't remember who it was now), and my auntie commenting that "she's called her Eddie! Funny name for a girl, isn't it?"

Honestly, I'd still go with the traditional spelling, and assume that most people will know Edie is pronounced eee-dee rather than eddie, and those who don't will know once they've been told- as others have said, Eidith could cause more confusion than it solves!
