What do you think? Please no comments about the Disney sea witch! We won't be watching that and live a life that takes us abroad etc.

'Please no comments about the Disney sea witch! We won't be watching that and live a life that takes us abroad etc.'

Are people who watch Disney cartoons destined to live a life without travel?

I would point out that even if you're Disney deniers many of her peers won't be so the reference will still pop up, not that I see anything too terrible about the Little Mermaid connection. Ursula is okay if a tad haughty for my taste. A million times better than Bernadette however.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 09/02/2015 17:20

Agree with squoosh, A Little Mermaid was my favourite film as a child and I have lived in France, Spain and Italy so the two aren't mutually exclusive Smile. I've even seen it in French! And even if you won't watch it, a lot of the children your daughter will encounter will have done. Not saying that's a reason to discount it in itself but I would still keep it in mind.

Alternatives: like Paloma and Priscilla mentioned above. My DB had a gf called Priscilla who was half Indian and half Portuguese so it feels international to me Smile

NC for this, as an Ursula, the sea witch thing has never been an issue or ever brought up. It's a wonderful name IMO and I get lots of positive comments about it. I have only ever come across it in Germany although it is known here. I gave my DC equally unusual names. If you love the name, I definitely recommend it! Smile

Lovely name.

Not twee, not harsh, not stupid made up.

Stylish and elegant.

ppeatfruit · 09/02/2015 19:40

stylish and elegant

Not imo when it's shortened (which usually happens in school ) to 'erse' or 'ursh' .

Marianne is lovely or Anne Marie, there are soo many lovely girls names.

Lunastarfish · 09/02/2015 19:56

It's a lovely name and is on my list!

BMO · 09/02/2015 19:58

I don't like it but do know a lovely little girl with that name - she is called "Ursh" though!

Thelovecats · 10/02/2015 04:21

I think it's great- I like Sula for short.
What about Bridget/ Brigitte as an alternative?

SoftSheen · 10/02/2015 04:30

How about the Hungarian variant Orsula? Orshie for short.

Tranquilitybaby · 10/02/2015 07:43

I love Ursula, such a pretty name x

brightreddress · 10/02/2015 09:00

I like Brigitte! But my husband doesn't.
Thanks for the positive Ursula stories, especially from a real Ursula!

I love it but would never have the cajones to use it... the Disney connection is too strong for me. Would love to meet a little Ursula though!

HazleNutt · 10/02/2015 14:37

Ulrika?

ursulaisawonderfulname · 10/02/2015 19:01

As for nicknames, I have only been (rarely) called Ursie/ Ushi on occasion by very close family and friends. For 99.99% of the time, I am called Ursula. I am delighted that there may be a little Ursula brewing!

Leeds2 · 10/02/2015 19:20

The one I know is known as Urshie or Ursh. I think it is lovely.

Anjou · 10/02/2015 19:29

I'm afraid I agree with those that say that the name Ursula is just not at all attractive. Definitely on a par with Bertha, as the poster said up thread. Some names just aren't a nice sound and this is definitely one of them. However, you obviously don't grimace when you hear it, so if you love it go for it!

I would point out the unfortunate nickname potential though. Kids at my school were creative with rude nicknames. Ursula would've been Arse-u-la, Count Arsula, Arse-you-love and then whatever variants they came up with after that. The buggers.

VixxFace · 10/02/2015 19:34

gross

Tanaqui · 10/02/2015 19:37

I like it and I also loved the Ursula Bear books!

ursulaisawonderfulname · 10/02/2015 19:44

Creative kids at my school too but I was never Arseula/ Arseyou love or anything vaguely similar! No awkward nicknames at school, uni or work I am afraid to say! Grin

fattymcfatfat · 10/02/2015 20:14

brightreddress I dont like ursula...but my dd is bernadette! thats a beautiful name Grin

brightreddress · 10/02/2015 20:26

KneeQuestion · 10/02/2015 20:39

I have known two Ursulas, both Catholic, both lovely. One was the prettiest girl at school!

I have positive memories of the name. Smile

fattymcfatfat · 10/02/2015 20:41

nope Lancashire! shes named after my dm! I honestly believe we need more bernadettes in the world Smile

Thelovecats · 10/02/2015 22:12

My great grandmother was Ursula- her nn was Lala. It's also a Manx name- the meaning I've read here is 'little wolf' instead of bear.

needmorespace · 12/02/2015 23:04

my sister is an Ursula - I love it
