Sian pronounced 'see in' - is this a thing?

Help me out here please... does anyone know anyone (am guessing mostly women/girls) called 'Sian' rhyming with 'Ian'? Always thought this was pronounced 'Sharn' so trying to find out whether this is even a thing.

TIA!

I would judge anyone who did that.
Idiots.

I know 3 Sian's and none of them are pronounced as rhyming with Ian. All the traditional way

StarOnTheTree · 08/02/2015 19:50

I've met one Hmm

BadPenny · 08/02/2015 19:51

Have to say, it came across to me like someone who's read it in a book and doesn't know the 'right way' to say it - but would hate to judge if in fact it's a valid alternative Wink

No, I've not heard it that way before. It might be an accidental mispronunciation - it's one of those names that can catch you out if you haven't heard it said aloud. My sister thought Sean was pronounced Seen until she was about 14. She hadn't heard it aloud, and if we hadn't been discussing a book where the lead character was called Sean maybe she'd still be in the dark!

tak1ngchances · 08/02/2015 20:04

In Ireland it's pronounced she-in

BadPenny · 08/02/2015 20:17

Ooh I quite like that Irish pronunciation! And yes I remember clearly when I first met a Sean and found the spelling rather interesting.

Star, how old was the one 'See in' you met?

It is a thing, it is a wrong thing.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 08/02/2015 21:03

A friend of a friend spells her name Sian and pronounces it Cy-ann

Only1scoop · 08/02/2015 21:05

Know three Sian's all pronounced sharne.

Sophronia · 08/02/2015 21:13

I know one Sian who pronounces it 'shan' - rhyming with ban, pan, fan etc.

SardineQueen · 08/02/2015 21:17

The Sian I was at school with was a sharn.

There was an accent on it somewhere too I think.

QueenBean · 08/02/2015 21:18

I've known a see-yan

Thought it was the right way to pronounce it when I met a sharne too but she quickly corrected me on that...

mejon · 08/02/2015 22:10

Anyone pronouncing it See-Ann is a twit.

There was one on a Sarah Beeny property programme some years ago who pronounced it like that and claimed, when asked, that it was because there was no circumflex '^' above the 'a'. No, it was because her parents were twits.

It is Shaaan with an elongated aaaah sound.

pieceofpurplesky · 08/02/2015 22:13

Shan is Welsh pronunciation I think (knowing two Welsh Sian pronounced Shans).
I taught a si-ann (pron cy-ann) as her mum read it in the paper and loved the name ....

Groovee · 08/02/2015 22:16

Shan is how I would pronounce it. My friends parents were Welsh and that was how they pronounced Sian.

Jbck · 08/02/2015 22:17

Knowone Seee annnn but it is a boy and sounds odd.

sleepybee · 09/02/2015 07:12

I always thought Sian was said Shan but I've now met a Si-ann but tbh I think it sounds like they didn't know how to properly pronounce Sian! If you want Si-Ann or She-Ann then think it should be different spelling

CaptainJamesTKirk · 09/02/2015 07:17

Are you thinking of Siwan, another welsh name? That's pronounced Seewan? Sian is pronounced Sharn.

Sophronia · 09/02/2015 15:07

Is the Welsh pronunciation Shan or Sharn?

mejon · 09/02/2015 15:21

Nearest approximation for an English speaker would be Sharn but without pronouncing the 'r'. It's Shaaan with an elongated 'ah' sound like I mentioned above not Shan as in man or pan.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/02/2015 15:27

In Welsh you do sound the i slightly too, but as pp said, in english the closest is sharn, not sounding the r obv. The accent is what makes the a long rather than short.

DuchessofCuntbridge · 09/02/2015 15:56

It's Shaaaan. Anyone who pronounces it otherwise is just asking for issues.

Pisghetti · 09/02/2015 16:04

Initially I thought of Siwan too but that is pronounced shew-un rather than see-wan

housepicturesqueclub · 09/02/2015 16:16

Shaaarn in Cheshire darling.

Can we ask Michael McIntyre?
