Ramona - fab or clunky?

Opinions on this name please. Fabulously unusual or rare for a reason? I don't know of any but I've seen it come up on here a few times and am strangely drawn to it.
If you have a Ramona what reaction do you get to her name?
Thanks!

I think Maggie Gyllanhal called her girls Ramona and Gloria. She must have an 80s waitress vibe going on!
I really like it. Sort of like Naomi and Leonie. You can only imagine a clever Ramona.

OnlyLovers · 02/02/2015 12:00

I love it. I think it's cool. Reminds me of Ramona Quimby, of course, but also the wonderful album 'The Real Ramona' by Throwing Muses. Who were ultra-cool.

I agree it's quite a don't-mess kind of name. Fab.

To the person who thinks it's popular based on 'cos I know loads'. Grin It was ranked 1098th last year with only 32 babies named Ramona. That makes it still fairly unusual, comparatively speaking.

Fab name! Romilly or Romola nicer still

reuset · 02/02/2015 12:08

"It's going to get very popular to the point of being common (in the sense of there being lots, not in the other way) though, like Ava."

Is it? Why do you think so, just out of curiosity?

DropYourSword · 02/02/2015 12:11

Cute and quirky!

ImperialBlether · 02/02/2015 12:11

I love it, but I wouldn't like Mona (moaner?) as an abbreviation. Great name otherwise, though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2015 14:31

I really dislike it, sorry.

cowbiscuits · 02/02/2015 14:58

Love it, love it, love it.

This is giving me ideas, I hadn't thought of this name, now I am saying it with my surname to see if it goes. It does too. Might amend my shortlist.

IsadoraQuagmire · 02/02/2015 15:11

It just makes me think of Dolores Del Rio (because I love silent movies) or Selena in Ramona and Beezus (which I hated). Great name though.
I know the song from 1928 written for the original movie, I've got the Paul Whiteman version on my ipod...

BlueStarsAtNight · 02/02/2015 15:55

I really like it, and am almost considering putting on my short list, except I think the 'moaner' thing will put me off in the end

IsadoraQuagmire · 02/02/2015 16:00

My mom often says to me "I should have called you Mona" she means this as a cruel insult! Grin

Scotslasslivinginfrance · 02/02/2015 16:03

Ramona is clunky but in a fab cool way!

Bicnod · 02/02/2015 16:06

Love it. Loved the Ramona Quimby books.

PeppermintCrayon · 02/02/2015 16:12

Love it but really dislike all possible nicknames.

tinkerbelletigger · 02/02/2015 16:16

Bob Dylan song called Ramona. I like it.

PurpleStripedSock · 02/02/2015 16:19

I secretly love this name but wouldn't use it for my own child. She was the star of some rather fab children's books when I was a younging. Ramona Quimby and her little sister Beezus :-)

Go for it so I can live vicariously through you!

FunkyPeacock · 02/02/2015 16:19

I like it

I can't help thinking about the fabulous Spanish nanny on Cold Feet though!

CitronVert · 02/02/2015 16:35

I love it. To me it's got a real rock chick vibe - very cool (although I realise the word 'cool' is probably very uncool).

HesterShaw · 02/02/2015 17:01

Probably because of the Ramones!

MateySkatey · 02/02/2015 17:03

I agree about it becoming popular. I know of a few in the last 18 months or so.

I like it but it's not unusual now.

BlueberryWafer · 02/02/2015 17:04

I quite like it actually, and normally don't like more unusual names,

NorbertDentressangle · 02/02/2015 17:08

I like it.

The only one I can think of is the actress that plays the daughter on Outnumbered.

The only drawback is the "moaner" nickname

marshmallowpies · 02/02/2015 17:12

I love love love it too, I remembered the Ramona Quimby books fondly but when we were choosing DD1's name I was also inspired by Ramona Flowers, the character from Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

I really tried to sway DH but he changed his mind about Ramona and vetoed it in the end. We went with Miranda instead, which has a similar sound/syllables, and which we both still like, luckily. Still have a soft spot for Ramona though.

Sophronia · 02/02/2015 19:06

I like it. I also like the similar Romina.

VixxFace · 02/02/2015 19:09

Really bad.
