Inver for a girl?

Just that really. We were joking around thinking of places that make good names (we're in Scotland, so think Arran, Isla, Ailsa etc) and randomly came up with this. Now we really like it, but generally don't really like made-up names. What do you think? She'll be a twin and her brother might be called Kasper (family name, so that's the spelling we're going with Smile)

Middle name Ness?

Dragonflyfly · 31/01/2015 09:22

Inver...... ness on sounds like 'in the' said by someone who struggles with pronouncing their th's. So basically horrid! Sorry to be harsh. Kasper however is a great name. Don't saddle the girl with a weird made up name.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 31/01/2015 09:23

?
It's made up and just ridiculous

Only1scoop · 31/01/2015 09:23

Middle name rary

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/01/2015 09:23

Noooooo!!! She'll spend her life with people going "Inver? As in Inverness? Or Inva?"

I would be bloody annoyed if I was lumbered with that.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 31/01/2015 09:26

I don't like it. I thought of Inverness straight away. I like Vanessa which has the ness part so a little connotation

ChippingInLatteLover · 31/01/2015 09:32

Madness.

fatpony · 31/01/2015 09:34

It means 'mouth of' I.e invergarry: mouth of the river garry

SanityClause · 31/01/2015 09:34

I don't think it's a very pretty name.

I know two sisters called Skye and Iona, if that's any help?

SunnyBaudelaire · 31/01/2015 09:35

It is awful , that poor child will be called Ness forever.

weegiemum · 31/01/2015 09:37

Inver means "at the mouth of the river" - eg Inverness is at the mouth of the River Ness.

I like Inverness, my dd2 was born there, but I'd not use it as a name.

If you're thinking of place names, what about Rhona/Rona or Iona?

marlus · 31/01/2015 09:43

Thanks for your views, that's pretty unanimous then Smile

Oooh! fatpony I used to live there!

AussieGoingHomeSoon · 31/01/2015 11:33

I don't mind it but I have unusual taste in names, what about Vernessa similar to Vanessa & Inverness !

myotherusernameisbetter · 31/01/2015 11:40

I am generally a fan of place names but I don't like that one.

We almost had a Cairn (boy) or a Blaven (boy), we have a Craig that DH wanted to spell Creag.

I've also come across:

Moray (boys and 1 girl)
Nairn (several boys and 1 girl, girl was Nairne though)
Merrick (boy)

and loads more that my brain wont grasp at the moment...

Return to the map and look again :o

TheNewStatesman · 31/01/2015 12:03

Really really silly, sorry.

florascotia · 31/01/2015 12:18

Would you call a girl 'Estuary'? As previous posters have said, that's what Inver means.

Others have already suggested some good Scottish place names used as personal names. You might also like to consider (for a girl): Afton (name of a river); Vaila (island/valley), Morven/Morvern (name of a mountain/peninsula), Eriskay (an island), Sanna (a beautiful bay)...

Selks · 31/01/2015 12:21

Not keen on Inver, for the reasons above.

Love Morven / Morvern though.

SomeSunnySunday · 31/01/2015 12:57

I'm not a fan of made up names either, but always quite fancied using Katrine (as in Loch Katrine). It would go well with Kaspar.

SomeSunnySunday · 31/01/2015 12:59

Sorry, Kasper. Wasn't commenting on spelling, just have a relative who is Kaspar and was typing on autopilot.

bouncingbelle · 31/01/2015 13:08

It's a no from me to Inver but what about Ines?

Inver as a name isn't new - there are a few of them around, all boys (so far!). As we Scots usually embrace geographical names as well as unisex ones, then I say go for it if you like it. It will be no more unusual than all the wee Cairns, Beinns, Corries, Corrans, Eileans and Braes that are running around.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/01/2015 21:02

Ooh not Sanna! They'd get Sanna Tree Towel.

Grin
myotherusernameisbetter · 01/02/2015 00:09

Oh I like Corran - why did we miss that! :(
