DH and I really like the name Iona,it is of personal significance to both of us. We are a little unsure of it as a first name and think it might be better as a middle name but we can't agree on what it would go with.DH likes quite traditional not flowery names,he thinks the names I like are too cutesie.
Has anyone any suggestions?

I like iona. It's quite vowel heavy so names alongside it probs should be less vowelly- like

Charlotte

Sophie

Bethany

Juliet

Lucy

I'm avoiding names ending in an a.

As long as your surname isn't a noun it's good (otherwise could end up as "I own a.....").

Florence Iona
Enid Iona
Ruth Iona
Louise Iona
Maeve Iona

I see nothing wrong with Iona as a first name. if that's what you like you should go for it

flippityflip · 29/01/2015 12:04

If you had it as a first name what would you have as a middle name?

Personally I think Iona is quite a heavy, lumpen sound.

Lumpen? We are in Ireland so pronunciation would be Eye-Oh-Na not the Welsh pronunciation Yona although not sure I'd describe either as 'Lumpen',though maybe my interpretation of what that means is wrong.

I didn't even know there was a Welsh pronunciation. There are lots of Ionas here in Scotland and I just think it sounds quite heavy and cumbersome. More like a war cry than a name.

But that's just my opinion!

And too many vowels, it doesn't look attractive written down either.

flippityflip · 29/01/2015 17:53

Yes I think all the vowels is the one thing that puts me off a bit as I can't work out what goes with it!

I'd put it with something that ends in a soft sound, like Louise or Florence
