Russian names for new baby?

esmea · 27/01/2015 20:39

Long story short- a friend of mine who was a single mum died in childbirth not long ago, I am the baby's godmother so she is living with me. Baby girl has no name yet. Her mother was Russian so I thought it would be nice to give her a Russian baby name.

So far I have these:
Anastasia
Evelina
Irina
Kristina

Does anyone else have any other name suggestions?

Lara is lovely and although it is Russian it is also fairly well used here so when she is older she can choose how much of her history to share with new people.

Could you name her after her mother?

Alternatively I love Anoushka.

steppeinginto2015 · 28/01/2015 00:35

If you don't like mum's name, perhaps we can help you find a variation.similar version of it?

skylark2 · 28/01/2015 11:21

What did her mum want to call her?

If you don't know, why not use her mum's name? Or her granny's name?

This is all very odd - new baby handed over to "godmother", a position which has no standing whatsoever as far as foster care goes?

skylark - op did say to cut a long story short.

None of your business why she has baby, maybe the mum made her the guardian or whatever.

LollyLondon · 28/01/2015 15:35

Tatyana (Tanya)
Natasha
Natalia
Ekaterina (Katya)
Alexandra (Sasha)
Marina

I would use her mother's name or another name from her family. She's not just 'Russian', she's a member of a particular Russian family and from what I have observed, many Russian families like to use family names.

mathanxiety · 28/01/2015 15:38

Misha is a boy's name, a diminutive of Mikhail.

ChickenMe · 28/01/2015 21:27

Zinaida
Oksana
Irina is lovely
Rozalia

eveylikesv · 28/01/2015 21:32

Nadia
Lena

esmea · 28/01/2015 22:17

Thanks everybody. Her mother was called Kristina. We decided on Anastasiya in the end as quite a few of you seemed to like Anastasia but we chose another variant. Thanks once again.

Kristina will be middle name

Sounds beautiful. I think you made the right choice making the mother's name the middle name not the first. It gives the little girl a special connection to her mother without the pressure of having to live up to the name or be the substitue "Kristina" if that makes sense.

sanilee · 29/01/2015 03:26

Sorry for the spelling error- *substitute

chaiselounger · 29/01/2015 04:54

I studied Russian.

I love Anastasia. My favourite name.

I love all the Russian names. Natalia. All of them.

chaiselounger · 29/01/2015 04:55

It was Right that you chose middle name as mothers name. Well done you!

wesH · 29/01/2015 14:17

Im so sorry for your loss, I wish you the best of luck. As far as names go, I like Irina and Kristina best, followed by Evelina. Anastasia is a bit much, and will always be reminiscent of the murdered princess Anastasia romanoff

It is a great name I have one There are lots of Anastasiyas besides the princess, and why not commemorate her -- she and her family are now Orthodox saints..
