Did you know this was pronounced Emmy?

I always assumed it was pronounced em - but heard jlo talking about her daughter and it's Emmy.

I know an Elle pronounced Ellie, so I'd guess it was Emmy.

But ffs.

crje · 27/01/2015 19:11

I would think Emmy too
I like the name but went for Emma in the end .

shakemysilliesout · 27/01/2015 19:13

I like it too and I like Emma.

Its pronounced Emmy.
Gorgeous name Wink

LaurieFairyCake · 27/01/2015 19:33

Is it an actual name? I've never heard of it apart from short for Emily/Emmeline

Naicecuppatea · 27/01/2015 19:34

I know an Emmie, a full name not a nickname.

ataposaurus · 27/01/2015 20:16

I know one pronounced Emmie - not massively keen personally on the name or the spelling, but would say Emmie or Emmy would be preferable.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 27/01/2015 20:29

I assumed it was pronounced Emmie (I also know someone with an Elle pronounced Ellie).

itssangriaoclock · 27/01/2015 21:28

Traditionally would be nn for Emma or emmeline.

But now used as a name. (Em-ee)

It's a fairly popular name in our area, know at least three

jaundicedoutlook · 27/01/2015 22:44

Didn't even know it was a thing.

So long as the surname isn't Royds, I guess...

BlueStarsAtNight · 27/01/2015 23:11

How weird, I'd have put money on it being pronounced Em.

Mind you I'm also certain that Elle is 'El' and not Ellie.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 28/01/2015 11:03

Yes Elle technically should be El and not Ellie... But people are strange Wink.

IsadoraQuagmire · 28/01/2015 11:55

I'd pronounce Emme as Emmy. But I'd pronounce Elle as Ell not Elly.
(Emme's like Bette which should be pronounced Betty, like Bette Davis did not Bet like Bette Midler does - I read that her mother thought it should be pronounced Bet, so that's what they always called her)

SirChenjin · 28/01/2015 11:59

After the infamous Elle-pronounced-Ellie-well-it-is-in-New-York thread on here I am not surprised Grin

florascotia · 28/01/2015 12:30

Two examples, from Italy and Finland here: www.forvo.com/word/emme/ Both approx 'EMM-eh', rather than Emm-ee.

Tea1Sugar · 28/01/2015 19:19

My Emmy is a nn for Emilia

LollyLondon · 29/01/2015 09:37

I know an Emmeline (Emm-eh-leen), and it is shortened to Emme (Emmy).

bienemaya · 07/02/2015 07:15

Emma = Emm-ah
Emme = Emm-eh
Emmi = Emm-ih

That's what I would say.

Wednesbury · 07/02/2015 07:24

There was an Emme at my DD's nursery. I think her mother was German. It was pronounced Emmy.

Andcake · 07/02/2015 07:28

Yes emme = Emmy.
I think it should have a revival a name I had forgotten about but I had a great aunt with that name and she was fab Grin

badtime · 08/02/2015 19:50

Isadora, Bette is a French name pronounced 'bet'. Bette Davis was the one with the non-standard pronunciation - she changed the spelling from 'Betty' for her stage name (she was actually Elizabeth).

nooka · 08/02/2015 20:16

I would assume that Emme was pronounced like the letter 'M'. Similarly to Bette (bet) and Elle ('L'). Never met one though.

coffeenut · 09/02/2015 09:48

Where I am from it is most definitely "Emm-eh"

Elle is "Ell".

reuset · 09/02/2015 10:29

Can also be pronounced as 'em'
