Am in hospital waiting for me ELCS which is this afternoon. I know it's a girl, DH doesn't and we still can't agree on a girl's name! We're in Ireland so not all the top UK names are as popular here. Surname is very common so would prefer something not so common.

Penelope - is my top choice, vetoed by DH.
Ella - is his, vetoed by me as too common/boring.
Juliet and Elodie - we both like but I HATE jules and Elle/Ellie and think they would be inevitable especially when she's a teenager and that would really annoy me!
Chloe - is a name I've always loved & DH likes but having been so popular for so long, I wonder is it boring? It's top 10ish last 5 years at least. And with common surname it just doesn't dound special enough!
Eva - is one we both like but so many Ava, Eve, evies etc it's not exactly unusual.
Clara - I like but most irish people pronounce it like Lara which I don't like, would that wreck my head or would I learn to live with it?!!
Layla - was just on the radio & DH thinks that should be it now!

Why do I have to find a problem with all of them?!!! I could love Chloe, Juliet or Clara (especially Juliet I think) but they all have some "issue"!

I surprised some people have only heard Clara pronounced to rhyme with Lara.
I've heard it pronounced as Claire-a just as often, more often probably.
It's like Soph-eye-ah versus Soph-ee-ah, you'd just have to tell people how to pronounce it if they'd only seen it written down.

HopefulHamster · 27/01/2015 13:48

They're all good names. Layla is nice!

squoosh · 27/01/2015 13:49

I've never heard a Clara called Claire-a. Doesn't appeal at all. Claire is fine, Clara is fine, Claire-a......no.

Sophronia · 27/01/2015 14:09

I like Penelope, Ella, Juliet, Eva or Clara. Not keen on Elodie, Chloe or Layla.

ChickenMe · 27/01/2015 16:36

Leila is a lovely name and something mysterious about it with the more Middle Eastern spelling.

BlueChampagne · 27/01/2015 18:23

Another thread mentioned the nickname Jet for Juliet, if that helps. It's a beautiful name.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 27/01/2015 18:28

Jet as a short for Juliet is much cooler than Lettie!

Clair-a is nicer than Clah-ra, IMO. And is the traditional British pronunciation, not sure about Ireland. Whereas the Clah-ra pronunciation came in from mainland Europe and has become fashionable over the last few years. Now everybody seems to have forgotten that it was ever pronounced Clair-a, which is a shame. Doctor Who doesn't help. But then they had a female character called Ambrose once, so what do they know?

I like Clah=ra fine, but prefer Clair-a.

NadiaWadia · 27/01/2015 18:51

The other names OP mentioned are all great, except agree with her DP in not liking Penelope much. Eva is nice, but in Ireland wouldn't that get mixed up with Aoife (sp?)

I love Elodie or Clara. Congratulations on your little one, which name did u decide on in the end?

Notyourbestfriendanymore · 28/01/2015 17:54

I really don't think people should worry so much about name shortenings - it really isn't inevitable! Go for the name you like the most.

babyblabber · 29/01/2015 15:35

We went with chloe. I've loved it for years where as Juliet, the other front runner, only made it into the list last week.

Had a wobble about it on day 2 and then the others came in to meet Her & hearing DD1 say her name melted my heart!
