Please tell me which you prefer between Xanthe and Taryn. Middle name Joy for grandma Joyce.

Taryn

Lunastarfish · 25/01/2015 11:26

Both are beautiful but I think Xanthe Joy is great

TeaAndALemonTart · 25/01/2015 11:32

Zan Tee is the Greek island (Zante)

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 25/01/2015 11:33

Love Taryn :)

The Xanthe I knew pronounced it Zanther, but everyone just called her Zanth. She's lovely but I prefer the name Taryn.

florascotia · 25/01/2015 11:36

The name Xanthe comes from an ancient Greek word meaning yellow or yellow-haired. It was pronounced Zan-the (the final 'e' like the 'y' in 'happy', not the 'ee' in 'teeth').

One of the Amazon female warriors was called Xanthe, but I agree with Squoosh that it has a very different vibe now.

There are resorts named Xanthe in Greece and Turkey.

Don't know where Taryn comes from; Tarin is a first name in SE Asia and a surname in Spain.Taranus was a grisly Celtic thunder god. There's a lot of waffle on the internet about Taryn being Gaelic in origin but trad Scottish and Gaelic alphabets don't contain the letter 'y'. Tara in Ireland is a famous prehistoric hill fort, but the use of the name Tara for people is recent.

IsadoraQuagmire · 25/01/2015 11:44

Xanthe. I've always loved that name.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 25/01/2015 11:48

Yes- Zan tee the island, Zan thee the name. No f!

shakemysilliesout · 25/01/2015 12:16

Lol at baby name Zante! What's next? Slaganas!!

I prefer taryn. Makes me think of actress taryn manning. She's brill.

TeaAndALemonTart · 25/01/2015 12:27

Ah, I'm a Barf not Bath person, and a Grarse not Grassss. Probably explains it.

I prefer Taryn OP.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/01/2015 12:34

Xanthe.

But I think that's because Taryn was quite popular in Australia a few decades back, in a Kylie/Tanya way. It sounds dated and not very classy to me. Might be different to the British ear.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 25/01/2015 12:35

So do you pronounce a 'th' as an 'f' Tea? I'm a little confused!

dragdownthemoon · 25/01/2015 14:23

I really like Taryn. I'm not keen on Xanthe.

Bellisperennis · 25/01/2015 15:41

Taryn is great

HollyBdenum · 25/01/2015 15:46

Xanthe. Taryn sounds a bit Australian to me.

SnoringNorma · 27/01/2015 02:19

Thanks for the help. Taryn was a name made up by Tyrone Power ( hangs head in shame at lack of authenticity!) My daughter said "What like Karen?" and I'm so fickle it's put me off. This poor child will be nameless at this rate!

Taryn is on our list, if this little one is a girl.

switchitoff · 30/01/2015 10:55

I prefer Xanthe. I've never heard of Taryn before and to be honest I wouldn't know if it was male or female. I'd probably expect a boy if I saw it written down. That could be just me though!

If you are looking for other suggestions, the following are in the same vein I think:

Thalia / Talia
Teagan
Tanya
Tara

GingerLDN · 02/02/2015 10:32

Taryn. It's pretty & unusual yet easy enough to pronounce and spell. I say this as someone who has had to spell their name every time I've said it for anything official. People still get it wrong.

InkleWinkle · 02/02/2015 11:19

Taryn's a great name.

I know 2! One is in her 30s & is a really lovely person & the other is only 4 and is cute as a button!

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 02/02/2015 11:29

Xanthe. I've never had much of an opinion on Taryn and now I've just met a baby one. And it really jars! It seems so hard and ugly said out loud all the time, just seeing it written down was much softer.

If you go Taryn try it out first for a couple of days. Such a harsh sound.

mrsnec · 02/02/2015 11:41

Xanthe is pronounced zanthee.

Where I am it's a term of endearment like calling someone blondie.it has the same meaning. When dd was born here all the staff called her Xanthe as a nickname because she's so fair.

I like both names.
