Hi ladies. We are expecting our DD to arrive in 2 weeks- and are stuck on deciding between the above names. Here are our thoughts... Alice is my granny's name, so has a family connection and has always been my favourite, but my DH thinks it's too "normal" in comparison to our DS's name (Zachary).
We both like Sadie, but have a concern about people thinking it is a dog's name- our neighbour has a dog called Sadie- and there are also no nicknames really. Also not sure if the Sa sound is too similar to Za.
Elizabeth is also a bit "normal" in comparison to Zachary, but I love the NN Lizzie.
And then finally, Thea- this is my DH's favourite- but I wonder if it's too current, and there also isn't an obvious nickname. Thanks in advance for your help!

Alice. Beautiful and classic
Thea. Lots of popping up but nice
Elizabeth. I think probably a bit boring
Sadie. Horrid connections for me but that's not at all your problem! I know one other who is about 3 now.....

overthemill · 24/01/2015 21:11

We'll, Thea is short for theadora (e) isn't it so use full name? There are lots of nicknames for Elizabeth: elspeth , Lizzie, Beth , Betsy, Liza, lisabet, so endless permutations.
Alice is lovely but not much you can do with it (ally ?) and I love Sadie. It is pronounced say- dee isn't it so totally different from Zak-ER-ee.
Not much help but I love Thea. ( hard T not as it ' the' if you use the Greek pronounciation as we do). And I love Elizabeth and all it's permutations, wish there hadn't been one of the cousins or it would be one of dd's names!

rockinrobintweet · 24/01/2015 21:13

Alice is the only one i like am afraid! i think they all go with Zachary though :)

babyblabber · 24/01/2015 21:39

Love alice & thea

wesH · 24/01/2015 22:00

Alice and Elizabeth are perfectly nice, normal, boring names with not much personality.

Thea is okay, maybe works better as a short version of Theodora

I like Sadie but think it sounds better as a nickname for a slightly longer name - Sadia, maybe? Nice name

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 24/01/2015 22:22

Dont go for Thea (really nice BTW) as she will be called Fear by persons that cannot pronounce TH.

Sophronia · 24/01/2015 23:05

I like Thea with Zachary.

overthemill · 24/01/2015 23:11

But Thea isn't pronounced 'th' its a hard 't' so no problem- like Theresa isn't the-reesa, is it?

Thurlow · 24/01/2015 23:13

Sadie is a bit too similar to Zachary IMO.

Alice and Elizabeth are lovely names. With Elizabeth you have such a wide choice of shortenings to use if you want to too.

Absolutely love Thea, but I would pronounce it "TH" rather than "T", not sure if that's right?

Drunkendonut · 24/01/2015 23:30

Elizabeth
Alice
Thea
Sadie
In that order. Elizabeth is a beautiful name, as is Alice.
Anna is another similar name.
Not sure about Thea or Sadie. They're not in the same league I don't think.

DustWitch · 24/01/2015 23:35

I love Alice and Elizabeth, they are both beautiful names, traditional but not overly common.

pleaseclosethedoor · 24/01/2015 23:41

I think Sadie is a lovely name. Elizabeth is nice too, and has lots of good nicknames - Beth, Liz, Lizzie.

Alice is ok, but to me it's very much a girl's name. Personally, I don't think it sounds quite right on an adult woman. I guess it's the Alice in Wonderland thing.

AngusAndElspethsThistleWhistle · 24/01/2015 23:44

I always think of Sadie being a pet name for Sarah. I love it though.

Canyouforgiveher · 24/01/2015 23:58

Like all of them and all of them go with Zachary but Alice is my favourite.

I love Thea but the th sound would put me off.

KingCrimson · 24/01/2015 23:59

But Thea isn't pronounced 'th' its a hard 't'

Not in English, it isn't. Maybe you're thinking of Tia?

NadiaWadia · 25/01/2015 02:47

I would rank them like this:

  1. Alice is beautiful
  2. Elizabeth is nice, and very classic, with a wide choice of shortenings (Beth, Lizzie, Libby, Betty, Eliza, etc)
  3. Sadie is nice and quirky in a good way.
  4. Thea is fine, you couldn't really object to it.
Cherrypi · 25/01/2015 03:01

I think Sadie. It is a bit more unusual. I love Alice but think it's gaining in popularity. Elizabeth is a good classic and Thea is pretty but feels like a nickname.

Innocuoususername · 25/01/2015 06:43

Alice and Elizabeth are both lovely classic names. Unlike a pp I think Alice is suitable for a grown up: Alice Walker, Dr Alice Roberts, Alice Arnold are a few non cute Alices that spring to mind.

Sadie is a dogs name to me, sorry, and I don't think it passes the serious grown up test either.

Thea is ok, but i think its a bit trendy at the moment and may date, if that matters to you.

ClariceBeanthatsme · 25/01/2015 07:34

I absolutely love Alice, I've not suggested it to DP yet incase he doesn't like it!
I think a pp mentioned Eliza instead of Elizabeth which is lovely and possibly a little less "normal" to keep your DH happy.

Rhubarbgarden · 25/01/2015 13:41

Love Thea. How about Elspeth?

fattycow · 25/01/2015 14:10

Elisabeth

Benderisgreat · 25/01/2015 20:37

Had to post for the first time in ages to tell you that I have a 3yo DS Zachary and 8 mo DD Alice. Obviously I think they go beautifully together Smile Also really like Elizabeth and Thea. You have good taste Grin

overthemill · 26/01/2015 16:21

No I'm not thinking of a completely different name! I have 2 friends who are Thea and both are hard 't'. Just as Theresa is hard 't'. And you pronounce it as you wish I suppose but I don't pronounce names incorrectly just because I'm English! I guess having a 'foreign' name make me a stickler for that. As a teacher I had lots of pupils from outside uk and I didn't force them to say their names in the 'English' way.

Madamecastafiore · 26/01/2015 16:24

Like Alice (I have one myself). She is often referred to a whizz or Ali.

Sadie will end up Sade, they probably pronounced Fea and Elizabeth Will be Lizzy so depends which of those you li best.

CPtart · 26/01/2015 16:34

Elizabeth, Alice and Thea in that order.
Don't like Sadie. It seems like an abbreviation for a longer name and there are far too many ie ending names of both sexes about at the moment.
