No, I'm Scottish. I just googled for Persian names, and looked at the Ds. :) Not knowing the culture it's difficult to know whether the names are modern or old fashioned. I picked those two as I liked the sound. Dari would be nice a shortened version for every day use if you do that in your culture. Sorry for the ignorance.

myotherusernameisbetter · 24/01/2015 00:53

There is a similar non Persian ( I presume) name, Darius, which might work too as its a known name in European culture so should work in Canada too. My favourite D boys name would be David.

MsCoconut · 24/01/2015 01:16

Darius
Damien
Dominic

All travel well.

I also knew a Canadian Devon but this name works less well in the UK.

Dylan, David and Daniel all in Top 100 in Canada.

Roan is a lovely name :)

BTW you can find out how common they are at

I think they could all work except Diba (too like Diva).
I went to school with Heeta & Meetra (sisters). So to me those are nice Persian names that I know can work fine in English-speaking cultures.
Rohan = almost Rowen, Welsh name.

I know a WASP Damon ("Day-mon").

yasi6182 To be honest, I think you should forget about what other people think. You will be saying your DS/DD's name for the rest of your life. It has to be a name that has real meaning to you, that you like and that you think your DC will like too. Don't worry about anyone else!

D0nnaO · 24/01/2015 19:36

Rohan. It's the name we've chosen but with the spelling Rowan Smile

ConcreteElephant · 24/01/2015 19:40

DH works with a Rohan - the 'h' is pronounced though, it's not like Rowan or Roan. It's more Row-han iyswim. I think it's lovely.

skinnyamericano · 24/01/2015 19:43

In that case, I'd go for Damon.

It's quite difficult to choose when in a different country/different background, so don't let MN put you off!

Rohan is a brand of clothing, OP.
With those trousers with zips so they become shorts.

Dear plinkyplonks
U are definatelt right but on the other hand our little ones will be spending lots of their time at school and in the society. They are little sensetive creatures and you don't want them to feel bad with their names every and each moment .

CultureSucksDownWords · 24/01/2015 19:56

The thing is though, that throughout their lifetime you can't predict how their name will be interpreted and taken by others. A name might be cool and unusual now, but really common in 10 years time. Or vise versa. Or there might be a world celebrity with that name at some time in the future. You just can't predict it.

I think all you really need to do is avoid names with already known bad associations, ones that have unfortunate and obvious nicknames/rhymes/initials. Then after that just go with a name that you like and that means something to you.

florascotia · 24/01/2015 19:58

I've only ever heard the name Diba in connection with the former empress, Farah Diba. I'm ashamed to say that I know very little about Iranian/Persian politics, but she was a beautiful woman who seems to have had a very unhappy life. Perhaps, with your heritage, the name conveys other meanings? Good or bad - I would not know. Purely based on it's sound, the name Diba would be OK almost anywhere, I think.

plinkyplonks · 24/01/2015 20:01

yasi6182 - :) I know what you mean! I was given an unusual name and was teased for it, but if it wasn't my name - it would have been something else :P Only two I've heard of before are Rohan (similar to Rowan & Roan) and Damon. The rest of them, I haven't met anyone with those names (I work with people from a variety of cultures so I presume that they are not extremely common but may be wrong) so don't have any experience of anyone being picked on for it.

Best of luck :)

yasi6182 · 24/01/2015 20:20

@ Florascotia your knowlege about persian colture and history is fantastic. Actually I like Diba (and DH loves it) exactly because of our Queen who is still queen for many of us iranians. Also it means "soft as silk".

@plinplonks I was in your situation too. My name was too uncommon in my time when I was a little kid and i didn't like it either cause I was teased all the time. That's the reason I am too sensetive about picking a proper name for my childeren.

myotherusernameisbetter · 24/01/2015 20:56

Thing is, if my child makes friends with a child from a different culture or country, you just accept the name for what it is, I have no basis to judge whether it has a nice meaning or is old fashioned or whatever, I just learn to pronounce it as best I can and that's that. i don't think anyone will judge your child's name on that basis either and kids meet their friends, learn their name and have no idea whether it is an unusual name or not as every time they meet someone it is probablya name they've never heard before.

Diba sounds nice, it's easy to say and easy to spell, I can't see any issue - if you like it then go for it. :)
