Honest opinions on Rupert please. If you have one, please let me know your experiences.

I absolutely love it, I think it is traditional, handsome, soft but strong, known but not too unusual. BUT...I know it has connotations and I'd hate to give my son a name that will cause him problems down the track. What do you think?

Thank you.

It's a PG Wodehouse style name to me. A bumbling toff who is unburdened by too many brain cells.

'Oh Woopert you awful wotter'.

squoosh · 22/01/2015 14:25

It seems to be on the rise though so I may be in a minority.

I know a toddler Rupert whose parents aren't toffs/posh. It suits him Smile

loislines · 22/01/2015 18:13

I like it. DH always says it's too posh when I suggest it.

Leeds2 · 22/01/2015 18:23

I don't like it at all.

Zsazsabinks · 22/01/2015 18:44

I LOVE Rupert. It's been my boy name since forever but I have girl after girl! Beautiful, strong, smart but not too 'overheard in waitrose'.

turdfairynomore · 22/01/2015 18:46

Nope. Not for me.

Bowlersarm · 22/01/2015 18:46

I love it.

Only know one child Rupert; he's 15.

BiancaDelRio · 22/01/2015 18:48

I have a strong negative reaction when I see/hear the name Rupert despite never knowing one.

It's the ultimate posh toff name. It sounds insipid and limp lettuce-y. I could never fancy a Rupert.

Becles · 22/01/2015 19:00

Love it.

ireallydontlikemonday · 22/01/2015 19:02

I love it.

shoobidoo · 22/01/2015 19:33

Great name!

TendonQueen · 22/01/2015 19:35

Sadly it immediately makes me think of Murdoch, who has taken over from The Bear as the best known one.

SoonToBeSix · 22/01/2015 19:36

I just think bear, sorry.

shakemysilliesout · 22/01/2015 19:53

Love it but posh.

dementedma · 22/01/2015 19:58

It does sound very upper class and toff-ish.
Weirdly, I only know one genuine, upper class Toff and his name is ....Paul. So who knows? [Smile]

chillytonight · 22/01/2015 20:02

Looks like you either love it or hate it! I didn't grow up here so I don't really get the posh/toff/poncy association, as a name itself written down/heard, I think it is lovely. I also don't mind the bear association, most names these days are associated with a children's character.

Hmmmm, still undecided about whether to use it in RL though. Keep the comments coming, would love to hear from a Mum of a Rupert!

I hate it, it sounds really wimpy!

ChanceBeAFineThing · 22/01/2015 21:16

I have a Rupert. We are not posh. Only ever had good comments about his name. Known as Roo or Rupes to immediate family.

He is definitely not a wimpy or wet child, he's determined, knows his mind, and has an incredible mischievous streak.

I think almost any name could have negative connotations or associations, and you would be hard pushed to find someone that actually commented to you that they hated your child's name.

Iamblossom · 22/01/2015 21:20

I love it, but biased, as it is my dad's name.

SaltySeaBird · 22/01/2015 21:21

It's my boy name if I ever have one. Love it.

BentFinger · 22/01/2015 21:27

I love it! My soon to be born grandson is going to be called Rupert.

caker · 22/01/2015 21:29

Royal Ballet principal dancer!

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 23/01/2015 06:02

Posh. Wet.

Sorry

Violettatrump · 23/01/2015 06:16

Bumbling toff is spot on.

Raif is nice
