Is it too much?

We are having a girl and DH really likes the name Noble.

We have two Middle names picked out Rachael Mary after my best friend and granny.
Noble Rachael Mary
What do you think? Is it too much? We will have both of our last names on her birth certificate but she will go by his last name mostly, not both.

I think that you can call your child whatever you want. There are plenty of cultures and traditions that have long names, lots of names, names with meanings etc. So, it's not like it's a universal law of nature that a longer name will cause your child problems. People are being very judgmental and narrow minded in what they see as 'acceptable'.

She may receive some comments from people who only approve of certain names; how much you take that into consideration is your choice.

britishbakeoffblues · 19/01/2015 04:21

Noble is not a name. It is a way of being, like good or bad or stoic.

Why Rachael? What's wrong with spelling it correctly Rachel?

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 19/01/2015 04:35

I actually know a Noble! (male).

His surname is also a first name and when I met him I assumed he had added it on as some sort of self selected title/aspirational name. Nope, it is his actual name.

Of course you can name your child whatever you want, but its a brave choice so you need to be 100% convinced yourself to.defend it against the inevitable questions.

If it was me with that name, as soon as I was old enough I'd apply to ditch Noble. The other two are perfectly lovely names in their own right.

Sorry if that wasn't the feedback you were hoping for.

dottytablecloth · 19/01/2015 04:37

I know lots of people with the name Noble BUT it's their surname!

As a first name it sounds daft.

Sorry but people will snigger!! Grin

I wouldn't but I would prefer Noble than Rachel as a first name.

I would prefer another virtue name over Noble though.

BikeRunSki · 19/01/2015 07:30

"Rachael" is a legitimate spelling variation of "Rachel".

KERALA1 · 19/01/2015 07:33

Your dh choice? He doesn't even have the excuse of hormones. I came up with some right corkers whilst pregnant but none as extreme as noble!

BitOutOfPractice · 19/01/2015 07:54

As far as I knew Rachael with the extra a IS the "correct" spelling. That's how I'd spell it anyway. Incidentally it's how my phone wants me to spell it too.

wesH · 19/01/2015 08:08

Even if Noble was considered an actual first name it would still be atrocious imo......she'd get called Nob for short

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/01/2015 08:13

Probably not the best choice.

florascotia · 19/01/2015 10:16

Honor, as suggested above, is a nice name, of Latin origin. Also from Latin, Patricia means noble. It's illogical that a Latin version of a word is perfectly OK as a name, while the English equivalent raises eyebrows, but I think that's the current situation.

ShadowSpiral · 19/01/2015 10:21

Noble sounds more like a title than a name. The rest of it sounds fine.

Only1scoop · 19/01/2015 10:23

I don't like sorry

Friend has 'Noble' as surname and unfortunately has always been known as 'Nobby'

Thurlow · 19/01/2015 10:24

DD's middle names are Rachel Jane, after family members - I think they're good, solid middle names. And no problem putting in your surname as another middle name too. It's not often you use them, after all, so most of the time she will be known as just "Noble Smith", not "Not Rachael Mary Jones Smith."

However I agree with PPs that Noble is a very... unusual name.

(doorbellringer, DD's full name is 4 names and 10 syllables long, it's not hard for them to learn it! Smile)

LollyLondon · 19/01/2015 10:24

Rachael Mary is lovely.....

eatyouwithaspoon · 19/01/2015 10:25

Rachael Mary name name or Patricia Rachael name name are nice. Nobel is not nice and she will get called nob or nobber

shakemysilliesout · 19/01/2015 11:50

I'd never normally recommend Patricia (it'll be back in 20yrs) but here goes. I much prefer Patricia to noble.

Surnames: I think you should have 3 middle names (yes3!)and one of them be your sur name so she has one official and unofficial surname. Your plan for 2 surnames but only using one in daily life will work for some forms but not all and we all hate it when forms / documents don't match! Lifetime of pain.

noitsbecky · 19/01/2015 12:00

Noble is one of the worst names I've come across on these boards.

Have you thought about Balonz?

silveroldie2 · 19/01/2015 12:59

Noble is beyond awful and your DH doesn't even have the excuse of making such a weird choice because of pregnancy hormones.

JohnCusacksWife · 19/01/2015 14:17

Noble is awful, sorry. And I love Rachel but not when spelt "Rachael"....it looks inelegant and clumsy. Plus 3 names and a double barrelled surname is just way to much. Imagine the poor girl having to fill out forms in later life!

sparkleDJC · 19/01/2015 17:56

It's a lot to live up to!! I can imagine someone saying to her after introductions "and ARE you?!" (Noble?) Remember Cher's daughter Chastity and what happened there!!! Smile

squoosh · 19/01/2015 17:57

I don't think Chastity Bono had a sex change because of her name Grin

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 19/01/2015 18:20

Noble? The fuck?

RedToothBrush · 19/01/2015 18:21

If you've read what the baby naming trends are supposed to be for 2015 are, then Noble is listed by a number of baby name websites.

'Defining' names of this nature might not be your cup of tea, but they are apparently bang on trend. You may find your children are the classmates of Nobles and Saints amongst others.

I don't think it will be as unusual as people think.

Do I think its too much? Possibly. And I do think its more of a boys, rather than girls name.
