Two middles names - too much?

Tranquilitybaby · 18/01/2015 19:31

DH has two middle names and his name sounds good altogether.

We had a middle name sorted for our little girl which has a lot of meaning for us. Then DH asked if I would like to add my late Nan's name as well, which I would absolutely love. Just a bit aware that it may be one middle name too many.

Thoughts? (please be nice)

Thanks

I have 4. My DD has 4. All family names. IYSWIM?

SophieBarringtonWard · 19/01/2015 08:13

I have two middle names, so do my DC. Never found it an issue. It's important to me as the third name is my parent's surname, and my DC third name is my surname.

marshmallowpies · 19/01/2015 09:47

Thanks also from me - this thread has reassured me it will be OK to give DD2 2 middle names as well & she won't be too annoyed by it later on! Just have to convince DH too, now...

Thanks all Smile

I have two middle names, as does my sister , and all our children

Very occasionally you meet computer systems that can't cope with 2 middle names or 2 extra initials. If that happens, and it's not an official system (ie not health, tax etc) I tend to just use first and last name. E.g. Rather than Ms EAD Condomine I'm just Ms Elvira Condomine. Same with the DC - if full names aren't required, just miss out the middle initials altogether. It's not been a problem so far. Just make sure that you know what you are using for things like passports and air tickets as they have to match!

sianihedgehog · 27/01/2015 21:30

Only two? I'm planning on three or four! My mum's family all have two, and they're by no means super-posh.
As far as computer systems and that go, I can't even spell my first name right for most of them - you find ways to work with it! :)

I've always loved having two middle names and plan to give dc the same. Sometimes only the first two initials get used due to lack of space on forms (all three of my names are quite long) but I like being a bit distinctive and always felt sorry for kids with no middle names at all. Do get the odd comment 'ooh fancy, why did your parents do that?' which I've never minded.

Sounds like you've already decided anyway but just adding another voice to the go for it pile Smile

ch1134 · 28/01/2015 07:09

I think it's too much. I don't really see the point in one but when I hear of kids with two it always sounds a bit of a mouthful. Form filling gets silly. Sounds indecisive.

DS has 2, it's useful for unique email names eg SKPSmith@ blah blah .com

Would be useful for her descendants when searching ancestry.com

bluewater12 · 28/01/2015 07:17

My DS has one, my DD has 2, but 2 short ones that work really nicely together. As someone said, if you were giving 3 names with 4 syllables long if would be a bit different, but even with 3 names, my DD's name only has 12 letters.

Brambles34 · 28/01/2015 07:46

I have 2 and I gave my son 2 middle names. (My dads name and my husbands late dads name)

IsadoraQuagmire · 28/01/2015 13:53

I've got two middle names. the first two have four syllables each, the third has two. If I ever have DC I'll definitely give them at least three names.

invisiblecrown · 28/01/2015 14:14

2 is absolute max! Its fine, really.

GoulashSoup · 28/01/2015 17:14

I have two and I like it. My parents chose my first name and then one from either family. One is my Mother's middle name, was my Grandma's middle name and was her Mum's name too. The other was my Dad's maternal Grandmother's maiden name. I like that having chosen to take my husband's surname I still retain a connection with both sides of my family, and that it comes from the women rather than just a male thing. That said don't choose long names, and don't get too precious if the second one gets dropped sometimes. I may be sentimental about my names, but they are more of a novelty than necessity.

My DS has two and any future children will too. One that is their's (no family reasons) one from my side and one from DH's.

Shrekandprincessfiona · 28/01/2015 21:26

I have two and so does our DC. We also have a double barrelled surname and it still did not deter me.

Cornberry · 30/01/2015 14:32

I have two Middle names - one from each side of the family - and I really like it. Some cultures have half a dozen!

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 01/02/2015 08:29

DD and ds1 have one, but ds2 has 2, to honour two relatives. Not been a problem, and it makes his name v distinguished. Plus his first name is a bit Marmite, but mns are more staid, so he can use one of them in future if he wants to.

Florrieboo · 02/02/2015 05:50

My daughter has 2 middle names, and they are not in honour of anyone, or even remotely family names, we just liked the sound of all 3 together. The second middle name does not appear on her passport even though it was on the passport form. She has 3 long names, and we have a long awkward surname, but, it flows very nicely.

RL20 · 02/02/2015 16:03

My brother has 2 middle names (whereas I was given none?!). They aren't family related but names that are associated with people that my mum and dad liked (I think one was a singer and the other was a war hero). They're never really used- but I suppose they aren't often really used are they?
I do like middle names, perhaps because I haven't got one! I'm expecting a baby boy and he will have 2 middle names- one because my partner wants a relatives name who passed away, and then I also want one of my relatives names too.

Tranquilitybaby · 02/02/2015 21:32

That's my only reservation Florrieboo the second of the two possible Middle names has huge meaning to us but as you say, on passports etc it'll just be forgotten. Can't swap the names around either as they don't sound right the other way.

Thanks everyone

I have just checked and both my middle names are on my passport (British). If it is your official name it should appear on official documents. It will still get dropped on some things though.

Tranquilitybaby · 04/02/2015 20:43

Ooh really that's poditive thanks x
