I have no preference in a general
Sense one way or another. An ie or an a make them two different names to me. Eg unlike both Maria and Marie. Like Ella not Ellie and prefer Cassie to Cassia. It is how it sounds as a whole word not just the ending.

babyblabber · 18/01/2015 12:34

I don't think one is better than the other but I seem to prefer all the ones ending in A on your list. And DD is Sophia not Sophie so I guess I have a preference!

IsadoraQuagmire · 18/01/2015 14:26

I've got 3 Christian names and they all end in "a" so I'm prejudiced! Grin
I prefer all the "a" examples, but also love Lucy and Lucie.

Guin1 · 18/01/2015 15:19

Never thought about it, but I prefer all the 'a' names on your list so maybe I do have a general preference.

Frikadellen · 18/01/2015 15:49

Well for me it is.

Maria

Ella

Cassia

Lucia

Lexie

Laura

neither Anna or Annie I just find them way to plain. To me they are equally bad :)

loudarts · 18/01/2015 15:53

Maria
Anna
Ella
Cassie
Lucy
Lexie
Laura

longestlurkerever · 18/01/2015 16:40

I like A endings. Imo they are more elegant - feminine without being twee, but it's not a hard and fast rule. I like Katie for example and Cassia sounds a bit clumsy compared to Cassie.

Dd is Anna though and I really dislike Annie. Sounds twee and subservient whereas Anna is (imo!) quite elegant and strong.

Rhubarbgarden · 18/01/2015 16:49

Totally depends on the individual name.

wesH · 18/01/2015 18:59

Maria - Marie is just the middle name of every aggressively suburban white american mother

Anna and Cassia just sound more 'complete' than Annie or cassie, which seem more like nicknames.

Ella over Ellie is just personal preference, same with liking Lucy more than Lucia.

Loathe the name Alexa, but Lexie as a given name is just tragic.

Laura/Laurie I think could go either way

CPtart · 18/01/2015 19:38

A- ending definitely. Ie always smacks of an abbreviation.

Sophronia · 18/01/2015 19:51

Maria - although I do like Marie as well

Anna - I like Annie too

Ella

Cassia

Lucia

Alexa

Neither

mathanxiety · 18/01/2015 20:26

They're a mixed bag really...

The -ie ending is French in the cases of Marie and Lucie. Maria and Lucia are Spanish and Italian.
Laura is also used in Italian but pronounced Low-ra (to rhyme with 'cow').
Anna is also Spanish and Italian, as well as German, Scandinavian and Russian.
Alexa is a UC German name.

Lexie, Ella and Ellie are more modern names that are nicknames for Alexandra and Eleanor.

Annie is a pet form of Ann/Anne.
Laurie is a pet name for Laurence along with Larry. The name, spelled Lori or Laurie, was popular for girls in the US about 50 years ago.

Cassia is a form of Keziah.
Cassie can be short for Cassandra as well as a pet form of Cassia.

I like both Marie and Maria, prefer Lucy over Lucia and Lucie, prefer Cassia/Keziah over Cassandra/Cassie, Laura over Laurie/Lori, and I prefer both Anna and Annie to Ann/Anne.

I don't like Lexie, Ella or Ellie.

I have DDs with both -ie endings and -ia endings.

maggiethemagpie · 18/01/2015 20:55

I prefer -ie endings. Don't really like -a endings. I really like -e endings too, eg Nicola, Lucille

ShouldiWork · 19/01/2015 09:59

You mean Nicole?

I think an 'e' is different to an 'ie' which always sounds like a nickname to me.
