Husband changing his mind at last minute!

Well, not quite the last minute but still only a month to go... I know it means we have lots of time but I felt happy to have the name nailed.

We had decided on Holly Clementine.

But! My silly DH mentioned Holly to someone, and they said "But it has no meaning behind the name." Then he started thinking...

Now he wants to go with Jemima, which he thinks is cute shortened to Mimi and also means "Dove" in Hebrew.

Of course that doesnt go with our middle name of Clementine, but we did have a fall back middle name of Rose, which works (I know EVERYONE uses Rose, but it is my grandmothers name and she's really old and sick and it would make her happy)

So now I like: Holly Clementine
and he likes: Jemima Rose

Are we supposed to wait until she is born and see what she "looks like" to figure it out? I've always thought this was a bit daft as babies rarely look the same even two weeks later.

Sigh... any thoughts gratefully received

If your husband is interested in "meaning", then he might like to be aware that the name Jemima caries a considerable amount of racial negativity in North America, so certainly isn't a "take you anyway" name as mentioned in an earlier post IMO. Whilst I do think it's a lovely name, that would personally be enough to put me off using it.
I would add that I certainly don't agree that the name Holly would hold anyone back, what an odd suggestion. It's a perfectly normal name and FWIW, I happen to know a couple of adult Hollys who hold professional positions if that really matters!?

Good point about the Aunt Jemima links in America Mrsindecision. Previous MN threads have suggested that it's a name that is avoided in the US due to its racial connotations. It would put me off using it too.

Gut reaction: much prefer Jemima. Holly is really dull. It's only with the Clementine against it that it sounds more interesting... but we never use middle names day to day.

Meanings: They BOTH have meaning, as Rhubarb has pointed out... and actually, Jemima has very negative connotations in the USA.

Holly Clementine sounds like a Christmas story character! - up to you whether that is + or -

I'd go for Jemima Rose, sorry OP. Nicer and rarer first name, plus the middle name has extra special meaning.

Pandora37 · 17/01/2015 17:44

I was about to comment on the racist connotations of Jemima as well. If you have family in the US or go there a lot I would avoid it for that reason. Google Aunt Jemima - if you really don't like it I'm sure you'll find enough to put your husband off. Grin Also, Jemima strikes me as a posh girl, horsey name. It is pretty though.

HolyTerror · 17/01/2015 18:10

As far as I'm aware, Jemima in Hebrew literally means 'warm', and the 'dove' meaning is (somehow?) derived from that and a bit more tenuous. Or suggest to your husband that the Biblical Jemima (daughter of moany Job) had two sisters, Keziah (which I quite like) and the wondrously odd Keren-Happuch. Tell him if he wants Biblical, you'll give him Biblical.

Although my associations with Jemima are a Aunt Jemima and Jemima Puddle-duck.

MrsHathaway · 17/01/2015 18:28

Didn't Job shag his daughters?

HolyTerror · 17/01/2015 18:49

No, Job is the miserable guy on the dung heap being visited with tribulations by God - you're thinking of Lot, after the fall of Sodom.

KatieKaye · 17/01/2015 19:06

I work with a Keren!

lljkk · 17/01/2015 19:25

I don't understand the conundrum because Jemima Clementine or Mimi Clementine seems fine to me maybe only because I think Clementine is horrible in all circumstances.

CrispyFern · 19/01/2015 13:01

Holly Rose?

Nightstar · 19/01/2015 21:46

I think it is back to square one! I chose the middle name. He wasnt very keen on either Clementine or Rose, but it was my turn to choose.

Sigh.... now we have nothing! and a month to go.

Genevieve Rose?

The 'Jen' bit is maybe a bit similar to Jemima, the overall Genevieve long and complex like Clementine, and it fits Rose as a middle name - could it work for you both?

I know one who is Vivi for short, I think it's a lovely and very strong name.

Ooh I know a Keziah
