Boy names...want something a little different but not too 'out there'

I'm looking for a name for a baby boy, something like Lex, Rex, Dexter, but not those actual names. Any ideas? I'm very worried about picking something too 'cool' as I named my 9yo DD something very different and, as I thought, cool, which went on to be seriously popular and I've heard described as 'chavvy' on here a million times! not that I give a shit haha

Can I join in with this thread for inspiration? I went for my 20 week scan yesterday, and was confronted with a little scrotum waggling around! Smile.

So, goodbye forever to Nancy and Hester, my favourite girls' names Sad.

I already have a Felix.

I'm liking:

Milo
Jasper
Rufus
Fabian
Caspar
Bevis
Aneurin (baby's dad is Welsh, and we are both raging lefties Grin)

Also, I LOVE the name Jarvis, but can I ask what that name says to you if you are a): over 35ish or b) under 35ish?

Ditto Griff......Grin

pinkipanther · 13/01/2015 10:23

Jarvis doesn't 'say' anything to me. If I met one, it would probably mean him from then on. It has a nice sound and isn't overused, so a good choice imo.

Stubborn - under 35, it screams Cocker to me.

Love Nancy. Tempted for my bump, but unsure of the Cameron connection. Sorry for the derail ...

No suggestions for OP I'm afraid. Great ideas above.

pinkipanther · 13/01/2015 10:28

Griff, on the other hand, makes me think of the German word
der Griff = the handle/the grasp.

PrincessOfChina · 13/01/2015 10:29

I'm borderline 35 - Jarvis = Cocker to me. But in a cool way.

I'm also lurking for inspiration and will throw Quinn, Monty and Malachi into the pot.

Problem is, everyone seems to want something a little different but not too out there. So you think you are being different and find three of the same name in your local playgroup. Either go balls out with something very different or an old classic IMO.

stubbornstains · 13/01/2015 10:47

Anything go on, you can have my Nancy! What are the chances of Nancy Cameron growing up and following in her father's footsteps eh?! Marine lePen, Alessandra Mussolini Grin

stubbornstains · 13/01/2015 10:49

I like Malachi too.

pinkipanther · 13/01/2015 10:53

Very, but by choosing a name outside the top 250 or so you will at least reduce the risk of the name becoming super trendy. Yes, it may still rise in popularity, but it may not.

If you pick a name that is ALREADY very popular e.g. Jack, Harry, Archie, Sam, Finn, then you're very likely to find many others with the same name.

There are lots of lovely suggestions on this thread!

AnythingNotEverything · 13/01/2015 10:54

Aw - thanks Stubborn.

Love Malachy. It's mentioned a lot on here. I wonder if it is rising in popularity generally (or just on MN).

Suzietwo · 13/01/2015 17:55

V scary pinki I have a Magnus and Reuben!

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 13/01/2015 19:10

Rudy
Jude
both v cool imo

StellaLuna82 · 13/01/2015 19:33

What would you say is really 'out there'? I don't think I've come across a boys name I've never heard before yet!!

babyfedleaning · 13/01/2015 19:35

My DS2 has the middle name Luxton (after his great great uncle) which I haven't heard anywhere else and am happy to offer as a suggestion!

Disastronaut · 13/01/2015 19:48

Seconding Arlo and Axel.

Jarvis - yy to the Pulp problem, but oh sadness, that will fade.

Further out there - I met an Atlas at a baby group. But that's Dalston for you.

Clueing4looks · 13/01/2015 21:19

Jarvis is more comic book/superhero nowadays - he's Tony Starks (ironman) butler in the comic book series and he's A.I type butler/PA in the marvel cinematic universe. Although it is stylised as an acronym (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System)

stubbornstains · 13/01/2015 21:37

clueing Grin

I suppose that's a salutary lesson in the changing meanings of names....

cherrypez · 13/01/2015 22:01

Thanks to all, I think I shall go for Rex. Favourite would be Lex but it's too close to DD's name. I love Rufus too, but it's a friend's son's name.

Good choice Cherry, friend has a little 13month old Rex, he is just adorable, SUCH a cute, cool boys name
