Punjabi Sikh/English name -Asher/isher

Hi,

I have a 70% chance of having a boy.. Though waiting for my 20 week scan to definitely confirm this.

I love the name Asher.. Though from my understanding 'Asha' is known as a female name in punjabi/Hindi.

I have found the name spelt ashar but think that is more Hindi, however the best alternative to a Sikh name is isher.

Am I correct in thinking that, we would prefer our sons name to be Asher legally, however we are not sure on the translation to a Sikh Punjabi name.

Otherwise I am considering Asher-jay/jaime/James as AJ (like ajay).

If anyone knows please help x

I don't know what the closest would be in Punjabi but Asher is a surname for some Indians.

Ashar is a Muslim name.

I've never heard of Isher. In my head it sounds like Isha - The girls name.

Asher is quite a common Jewish boy's name, but mostly amongst quite observant/Orthodox families in my experience.

My cousin called his boy Asher, I'd never heard of it and not a fan tbh he isn't Muslim/Punjabi he's black Caribbean and his wife is white British.

I'd go for it if you like it

WrappedInABlankie · 11/01/2015 14:54

Oh and my cousin is in fact called Jay and has a brother called Jamie Grin

Although I like the name it does sound better for a girl IMO. Asha would be lovely if you have a girl. There are lots of ther boys name starting with Ash.

Isher/Ishar is a Punjabi Sikh name meaning 'supreme God'.

It wouldn't matter to be because I wouldn't be using the name as that I was curious to know the alternative name.

@kalidasa Asher is a Hebrew word as well and it is in the bible which is nice for me as I am Christian.

I don't like asha for a female, it reminds me to much of Ashley's lol I think Aisha is nice for a girl but we are not Muslims.

Thank you x

Asher is a very old Hebrew name that long pre-dates Islam. Asher was one of the sons of Jacob and therefore also one of the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

It means happy or blessed in Hebrew. We have an Asher and have had nothing but positive responses to his name :)
It means happiness and blessed

I think Asher is a great name for a boy, whatever it's provenance (I'm plain English and non-religious so couldn't comment on that). It's unusual but not wacky. Didn't sound like a girl's name to me.

I prefer Asher James to Asher-James personally (could still use the nn AJ)

Asha and Aisha are both nice names for girls.

CompletelyIncompetent · 12/01/2015 20:00

It's = its oops!

Lulu3108 · 12/01/2015 21:58

To be honest both me and my OH aren't practising religious or 'cultural' people. We are both British of different backgrounds, going back to our grandparents emigrating here.. So a traditional name isn't really important.

My OH birth name is a very traditional Indian one, so he is not happy with the baby having that style.

I was just curious to know if there were any similar names, as Asher/asha/ashar is known as more of a feminine name to his family and to Sikh Indians.

as I really love the name I was looking at a similar as a NN... Or alternatives.

This is such a hard one guys, I am really picky. I love the Spanish names for girls like Ava, Maya etc but it's so hard for a boy!

I have an Asher James and totally love the name.
Had to wait eight years to use it, as DD turned out to be a girl. It suits him, he loves the meaning, and it's quite a 'cool' name.
If you like it- use it.

Lulu3108 · 13/01/2015 17:12

Thank you, that's a nice comment.

I like that it's different but slightly familiar with ash but not traditional or dated like Ashley lol.

My Asher is 9 and he loves his name. We're Catholic, he's the only Asher at Mass Grin

Beautifullymixed · 14/01/2015 09:43

Agree about Ashley/Ashleigh being dated. And I hate the nickname Ash.
He is known by his full name, sometimes AJ as a pet name at home, but in public always Asher.

The name is relatively popular in the West Indian community. I am mixed race, and the name is well known.
He has been called Usher over the years too Hmm
I am always proud to call him in public. Love it Smile

NotEntirelyWhelmed · 14/01/2015 09:47

You could go with Ashwin.

Lulu3108 · 14/01/2015 16:33

My mums side is west Indian Grin

My baby will be very mixed of many nationalities and races lol

That's why I wanted a name that wasn't common but wasn't traditional either like jack or Indian like inderjeet lol

I just think it will fit, I am scouting for others and I expect when I see the baby I'll be able to pick x

Ishaan? Ashwin. Ashish.
Asha definitely for girls (Brimful of Asha etc, sorry).
Double barrel not good, especially with the cultural mix. Asher James (known as AJ) better.
Maya is also a Hindi name (or Maia, English).
