Elodie- would nickname be inevitable?

After months and months of searching I'm coming back around to the name Elodie.

My main concern is I don't like Elle/Ellie/Ella and feel like, even if we insist on no nicknames, you can't control it forever and they are the natural ones that seem most likely. Have read online that Lola could be a nickname but think an Elle type one is inevitable at some stage.

Should we let that stop us?

Other possibilities are Chloe, Penelope or Olivia but none are perfect! Siblings are Noah & Sophia.

Ellie for sure.
Dee?

I think all names get shortened and if its a short name someone will always find a nickname to use.

We used Kelly thinking it wouldn't get shortened and everyone calls her Kel.

I think Elodie will become El or Ellie for sure, eventually. But I think you can call her Elodie and just not shorten it - the nicknames won't come until school age and then it is up to her. She might dislike those names too and insist on Elodie. I have a friend who called her daughter Samantha and insisted she didn't like Sam or Sammy, Samantha is 14 now and I have never heard her called Sam!

I am always surprised how many people say nicknames are inevitable. I think you can't bank on the child not wanting to shorten a name but surely that has to be up to them everyone else it's just "Sorty, I prefer (longname)" and that's that? I know a Victoria, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Michael etc that no one ever shortens, as well as lots of Beckys, Vickys, Lizes and Mikes. Not to mention several people that are as always known by a nickname that has no connection to their first name at all.

Agree with longestlurker I know a Juliet and a Margaret I've never (dared) abbreviate!

cheapandcheerful · 16/01/2015 16:17

I know a 4yo Elodie. Never shortened.

CakeMakesMeHappy · 16/01/2015 16:22

If she doesn't like it she won't let people shorten it. I am always very clear that I HATE the shortened version of my name!
On the other hand my mum likes her name shortened but my grandma hates it and has NEVER called her anything other than her full name.
It's hard to control but if you like Elodie that's what you will call her!

squoosh · 16/01/2015 16:48

It's inevitable there will be people in her life who will call her El/Ellie. Maybe not in the first year, maybe not even in the fifth but soon and for the rest of her life.

You can call her Elodie at home though and let other people call her what they want. Unless she objects to nicknames herself there's little you can do about it, unless you want to sound really controlling.

burgatroyd · 16/01/2015 16:53

I have a DC with a name that is similar but so far no shortening. Its not inevitable. If I met one I wouldn't think Ellie. Plus people will call her Elodie to differenciate her from other Ellies.

Pretty name but I prefer Melody, but then you have possibility of Mel...

wildernessagogo · 16/01/2015 16:58

I was at school with an Elodie who was known to family and close friends as Lods!!

squoosh · 16/01/2015 16:59

I'd probably call her Els Bells and get a stern look and a 'it's Elodie actually'.

Persipan · 17/01/2015 08:17

I know an Elodie known as Lili...

ZebraGiraffe · 17/01/2015 09:14

One of the main ways to avoid a nickname is to give her one, but we found even with DD her nickname was something else again once she was a teen! People seem to think everyone needs a nickname for some reason.
She could also become Dilly.

ZuleikaJambiere · 17/01/2015 09:18

I have a 6 year old Eloise and so far no one given her a nickname

reuset · 17/01/2015 17:08

My 8 year old niece is Elodie and it's never shortened.

OttiliaVonBCup · 17/01/2015 17:10

Ot Lolo if you're particularly unlucky.

CrystalSkull · 18/01/2015 00:44

I know a 26-year-old Elodie and I still haven't heard it shortened.

Frikadellen · 18/01/2015 15:46

The 2 Elodie's I know are both simply called Elodie. One is now in year 4 the other is about 2.

I have an Eloisa she is not called Ellie/Lou/isa or anything but Eloisa as she likes Eloisa. it does come down to if you allow it. dd says " its Eloisa actually"
