What can Mabel be shortened to?

We're keen on Mabel for DD2 (DD1 is Poppy and we also have Archie and Toby). Our only concern is what it could be shortened to as we can't think of anything!!! Our other choices are Ottilie (Tilly) and Violet (Lettie). Any ideas of what a Mabel could be known as?!

I have a Mabli which is the Welsh version of Mabel. She's sometimes called Mab (rhymes with dab) or Mabs but as the full name is such a short one it doesn't happen often.

squoosh · 09/01/2015 20:57

But burgatroyd you also think Beryl is a nice name. Beryl!

EeekNumber4 · 09/01/2015 21:16

Our Mabel is Mabes or Mabs or Moo but I have no problem with calling out Mabel in the park!

UnrelatedToElephants · 09/01/2015 21:20

I like May - her birth month is a nice touch.

burgatroyd · 09/01/2015 21:23

squoosh and you Gloria. On the one hand its fabulous! It makes me want to open up my arms and sing. On the other it makes me think of rude unmentionables.

Fadingmemory · 09/01/2015 21:23

Maybe, Mabe, Mab, Mabs, May, Belle, Bea

Isabeller · 09/01/2015 21:24

Babe (works with Pop, Arch & Tobe)

burgatroyd · 09/01/2015 21:29

Sorry for hijack but Mabel is fine on its own. Love Mabes though.

Sophronia · 09/01/2015 23:01

Mae / May, Maya, Maybee, Bel, Belle, Bella

Queazy · 10/01/2015 11:21

I love the name Otillie

avocadotoast · 10/01/2015 16:56

Names don't have to be shortened though Confused mine and my sister's aren't and they're both three syllables. I wouldn't be picking a name and worrying about what it'd be shortened to in any case!

avocadotoast · 10/01/2015 16:57

(Unless it was like Richard or something, obv. Anything with a humorous short version needs considering!)

I've also got this as my choice for a girl, although mite end up as a muddle name. I am with u on the NN's... I often use rhymes with my other kids... For example my dd's middle name is rose... She is often called posy, and answers to it.
I would probably call her sumthing like bella or may ... Or it might end up as mayby or just baby.... I was also thinking i might call her mabelle to get the 'bell' sound rather than the harsher 'bul' sound.
What are your thoughts on middle names for your mabel?

lucywiltshire · 11/01/2015 19:59

jazzyjenbo Our Mabel will probably be Mabel Rose as Rose is my fave middle name of all time but we couldn't give it to DD1 is she is Poppy so two flowers would be a bit much!

jazzyjenbo · 12/01/2015 18:30

Lol i thought u would say that ... Already in use as i've said for me but it gives u another NN... 'Mabel rosie posy'.... Like i call mine rosie posy.

P.s had my 20 week scan today and it us a Girl so will definitely get mabel in the name sumwhere x

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/01/2015 18:36

Mabes is ever so cute.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/01/2015 18:40

In Sarah Waters' recent book the character Mabel is called Billie fir short. Would that work?

MamaLazarou · 12/01/2015 20:43

The M-Dawg

MamaLazarou · 12/01/2015 20:43

Mixmaster Mabes

ememsmum · 13/01/2015 20:50

I sometimes call our Mabel Mabley. Her aunt and her childminder have been known to call her Mabes WHICH I HATE - she is 21 months old and definitely not a Mabes, don't be so fucken lazy*

*excuse the rage but people automatically shorten my name, which really grates, and hate that they do it to my child.

HighwayDragon · 13/01/2015 20:57

may, maybe, belle, bella, bee, mimi, bebe, bee.

CrispyFern · 13/01/2015 20:57

I love Mabel.

Also like Beryl and Gloria.
And Mavis.

I say: don't worry, a nickname will appear, become apparent, in time!

MarmiteChocolate · 13/01/2015 21:27

My cousin is called Mabel and she's always been known as BamBam

What's wrong with May? No one will know her birth month, you are definitely over thinking it. Mabel is a nice name and May is a perfect nickname for it.
