Wilberforce, Percy, Mungo...

If it weren't for DH DS2 (and DS1 for that matter) would be called something like this, my absolute favourites list goes:
Wilberforce
Percy
Mungo
Digby
Django
Otto
There are numerous reasons that i can't use any of these though, so what DO i call him? 5 weeks (hopefully) left to decide. Please help, I'm going around in circles.
Obviously I know there'll be loads of people who loath the above list and think i'm a crackpot but I'm not taking the and i know there must be something out there as lovely (to me) as these are but that can be used in contemporary society.

Your names are a very mixed bunch - are you choosing them because you like ths sound or because of meaning/associations?

If the latter, then - in the order of your list:

hero= Hector, Horatio
chivalric legend = Orlando (or Roland, the same name)
Celtic saint = Fergus
17th cent religious/cookery writer= Kenelm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenelm_Digby
Jazz= Gil/Gilbert
Gothic/Germanic warrior hero = Alaric, Manfred

More seriously, have a look at this for some suggestions www.britishbabynames.com/blog/historical-name-commentary/ and, if you have the time www.britishbabynames.com/blog/historic-names/ 'Unusual' names have always been controversial, and people in the past used just as wide and surprising a range of names as we do today.

I like Fergus from flora's list

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/01/2015 11:26

Could you use one of your favourites as a second name, perhaps?

To be honest, I rather like Mungo - and if you are a Scot living in Scotland, I think it would be fine, if a bit rare Likewise Otto in Germany.

MustardKernel · 06/01/2015 11:44

I think it's their sounds/shapes/rarity/playfulness that appeals.
Flora - thanks, i'm a big fan of that blog - the amount of times i've gone back to the 'funky clunky' and the 'gothic victoriana' lists over and again.
not scottish, just love mungo but DH will not hear of it.
DH is quite traditional so we have to find a middle ground

Maybe using one as a middle name would count as middle ground?

loislines · 06/01/2015 12:40

Wilbur or Wilfred? Similar to Wilberforce but slightly more conventional.

loislines · 06/01/2015 12:45

Douglas? Magnus?

squoosh · 06/01/2015 13:54

Praise the Lord for DH protecting the little mites from being called Percy or Wilberforce!

What about...........

Ivo
Bruno
Cassius
Ivan
Angus

I love Mungo. Why can't you use that?

Otherwise Monty?

Sidge · 06/01/2015 14:43

How about Rufus?

victoire1208 · 06/01/2015 14:52

Have a stumbled upon a parallel universe?Grin all a bit try hard for me but I suppose it all depends of your area and the names of his peers.
Of all of the above Bruno is the best.

dorasee · 06/01/2015 15:01

Oh my goodness. Wilberforce...my DH and I joked about this every time I was pregnant. Don't do it! Your LO will have the royal P taken out of him.
And Mungo!
Though I love Otto and we nearly named our son Otto. BUT we are both riddled with German and Czech DNA, so it felt right for us. Our parents are from Germany/Eastern Europe. It's very Germanic, Otto is.
If you go down that route, Ulric or Ulrich is also a nice name.

squoosh · 06/01/2015 15:05

Wilberforce would be so adorable on a Jack Russell.

It loses it's charm when transposed to a human.

loislines · 06/01/2015 15:09

What about Duncan? Great history there but not heard any little ones called it.

Guin1 · 07/01/2015 06:34

Jago?
Jory?

AnneofCheese · 07/01/2015 06:38

Thank god for you DH - it sounds like you're naming a pig! Grin

shoobidoo · 07/01/2015 12:15

Not so keen on your op suggestions but I love

I met a Perry a while ago. He was a teenager.

Pootles2010 · 07/01/2015 12:27

fairyteepee · 07/01/2015 17:46

MustardKernel · 07/01/2015 19:22

aoife24 · 07/01/2015 22:23

I rather like Mungo , patron saint of Glasgow but I do wonder if anyone would dare.

BlueStarsAtNight · 07/01/2015 23:07

I can't personally see how Atticus, Magnus or Thor are any more 'useable' than Percy, Mungo or Otto! I like them, especially Percy - I may use it for next DS' middle name.

What does your DH like? Just how far apart in style are you?!
