Ottie or Pixie?

Our little girl will be here in two weeks time and we were set on the name Ottie. Yesterday my husband said he likes the name Pixie which had been my favourite but he had said he didn't like it!

So now, after eight months of thinking this one would be called Ottie I'm now not sure. I love the name Pixie. And Ottie.

What do you think?

I'm alternatly Shock and PMSL at your husband.s thinking on names that end with the sound 'lee'. Does he seriously think names such as Hayley, Amelie or Emily sound masculine because of it?

agree with everyone else, both are fine as nicknames but could be preposterous for an adult (as preposterous as your husband's thinking, tbh). It's not because they are unusual, I agree with you that unusual names are more the norm these days (if that makes sense). It's because they are very very cutesy.

PiratePanda · 02/01/2015 20:20

Ottie is awful. Not only is it not a real name, as lots of others have pointed out she will get teased - hottie, spotty, botty, etc.

Pixie at least is sort of a real name. It's not very grown up, but if you really like it there's clearly no arguing with you.

How about Pixie with a grown-up middle name so that if she really hates it when she's 25 she has a choice?

Deerhound · 02/01/2015 20:24

I also quite liked Ottie until someone mentioned the Hottie thing.. Makes me think of baby otters. Then again Ottie the Hottie isn't so bad Smile

Ottilie is much nicer though, but I appreciate that persuading your dh may be tricky! People's opinions on names are never totally rational.

GingerbreadPudding · 02/01/2015 20:53

Yes. I like ottilie. But it's a no go. Husband doesn't like it. I realise there will be never be a name everyone likes and I'm totally loving the blunt 'hate them both' responses. Genuinely. I like a bit of honesty and it's useful to feel which one I'm most defensive of. Keep up the brutal work ladies Grin

How about Dottie, short for Dorothea (or Theodora) or Odette?

KatieKaye · 02/01/2015 20:56

Ottie makes me think of otter, like doggie for dog.

Pixie is my childhood nickname - sweet for a little girl. But she isn't going to be a little girl for very long.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 02/01/2015 20:58

Ottoline and Ottilia got mentioned earlier, could you talk your DH into one of those?

RiverTam · 02/01/2015 21:12

Ottoiline is nice. Ottilia sounds a bit too much like Attila (the Hun) to me.

StampyShortnose · 02/01/2015 21:15

Dislike both names I'm afraid.

Too cutesy/ nicknamey for an adult who wants to be taken seriously.

A pixie is a little elf thing, why name your child after that?

Ottie will just get called botty/ spotty etc.

Do you have any other options?

Caff2 · 02/01/2015 21:23

I think Pixie is craziness, tbh, but people do just accept names once they are given. There is a little girl at the school I work at whose name is Frozan (not British parents) and none of the kids bat an eyelid despite the film "Frozen" or even the word as they're just used to it.

In my opinion, anyone who doesn't call their daughter Francesca is unreasonable though as I'm still not over the fact I will almost definitely never have a daughter and will not get to use it Wink

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 02/01/2015 21:25

Are you and your husband slightly built? If there's any genetic chance of your daughter being above average size, I don't think Pixie would work.

DakotaFanny · 02/01/2015 21:26

Pixie is cool. I have never heard the name Ottie before, though suspect it could be a grower!

As a fellow teacher, you are unlikely to come across a lot of little monsters with either of those names, which can only be a blessing. Nothing worse than a horror ruining your baby's name! X

calzone · 02/01/2015 21:27

Bonkers!

I would not want to be called Ottie or Pixie.

Would you?

Caff2 · 02/01/2015 21:32

I still only like the boys' name Samuel. Which is unfortunate as I have two boys. My second son is Leo and it's never really grabbed me, but it is definitely his name now. It was better than anything my insane dp fancied. Oh, I did like Raphael. Or Caspar. Both vetoed. And I can never have a Raphael now, even if we did have miraculous baby number three, as everyone would think I loved Ninja Turtles, what with Leo.

But I really really think you should think carefully about Pixie. If you love it, go ahead, but Ottie, whilst unusual, is less associated in the mind with anything. Pixies are, if you see what I mean.

Poppins27 · 02/01/2015 22:23

My Dd is a Lottie, but I actually prefer Pixie over Ottie. I'd love a Dp who would let me use Pixie!! Go for it Grin

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 02/01/2015 22:49

Pixie would be so funny if DD ended up about 10st overweight!!
Ottie isn't a name, and is a tad silly OP.

Inkspellme · 03/01/2015 07:19

I agree that there are a lot more unusual names out there now and a tolerance for that too. However I think that there is a difference between unusual and silly. your choices are falling into the later.

AnneofCheese · 03/01/2015 07:23

Too cutesy and neither of them are actually nice names. Ottie is particularly awkward and silly. Have you considered Balonz.

Timetoask · 03/01/2015 07:30

Pixie is not a name (lotte is called that by family beause she was premature and tiny), ottie is just awful!

ICanTotallyDance · 03/01/2015 07:47

Very sorry, OP, but I think you are mad to consider the name Pixie.

Here is a list of sayings I like to consider a name being used in. For convenience sake, I'm imagining your surname (or your DD's future surname) as Smith. Please substitute your real family name as you read these.

"All rise for Her Honour, Pixie Smith."
"The Prime Minister, Pixie Smith."
"Your psychiatrist, Dr. Pixie Smith, will see you soon."

And then I like to imagine the name with titles:

Princess Pixie, Lady Pixie etc.

And then I like to imagine the name on three different adults:

A normal weight person.
A very thin person.
A very fat person.

And then I like to imagine the name being called at a park with a whole bunch of children and dogs, and envision whether more children or pets will come running.

And I'm very sorry, OP, this is quite harsh but I think Pixie is an absolutely dreadful name. It's a nice nickname though, and I think it's very cute for a child.

IMO, Ottie is nicer as a name but still not quite right? Does your DH have any suggestions.

sleepybee · 03/01/2015 07:49

None are my taste, sorry!

Really surprised as a teacher you would go for these names, my Mum is a teacher and cannot stand names like these - suppose that's where my like for the more traditional comes from. I hate to say it but I probably would judge someone with these names prior to knowing them. I think they are show names something you'd see on Toddlers & Tiaras

KoalaDownUnder · 03/01/2015 07:54

Ottie is awful. Otter? Hottie? Potty? I just don't get it. Lottie is better.

Pixie is cutesy and silly.

Those are my brutally honest opinions, but if I had to choose at gunpoint, I'd go for Pixie.

OttiliaVonBCup · 03/01/2015 08:02

Ahem....

How did I miss this thread?

insanityscratching · 03/01/2015 08:05

I don't like either, sorry. Aitches are regularly dropped around where I live and I'd pity a child named Ottie in early secondary school because if she was a stunner she'd be laughed at and if she wasn't she'd be laughed at even more. Pixie I think is cute up until about age four but what happens if your child when older is anything but cute? It doesn't really fit a tall or broad teenager tbh.

Bohemond · 03/01/2015 08:15

Agree with Ican above - would be fine if your child wants to be a pop star but neither pass the high court judge test
