And what are your impressions of them?

Tomboy or feminine ?
Smart? Sporty? Artsy? Boring? Nice? Nasty?

They are three of my favourite names girls names atm. :)

I'm an Elizabeth, have never been called Liz! At least, not that I have responded to Smile but I am very strong willed.
Love my name, have been known as Beth, Betty and lizzie at various points, all names I love. It's such a great name as so easy to tweak to suit a child's personality.

MuscatBouschet · 02/01/2015 05:07

My best friend has always hated her name Liz.

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/01/2015 05:17

My DD1's middle name is Elizabeth. She's 23. She's quite a tomboy and did physics at university. Xmas Smile

I knew an adult Elizabeth about twenty five years ago - she was utterly gorgeous! Clever, headstrong, broadminded, always off on adventures. I think I was more than a bit in love with her...

I know an adult Arabella. Über posh. But nice.

My Grandma is Elizabeth! And she is the kindest most beautiful woman ever. Also I always think of Elizabeth Bennett, which is a positive for me anyway!

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 02/01/2015 07:33

I don't know any Arabellas. I knew one Annabel who was intelligent and opiniated.

I know seven Elizabeths, four of whom are known as Liz. I don't think they have anything in common, apart from their name. It's a good name; it was on our shortlist.

StarDustMonkey · 02/01/2015 07:35

I'm an Elizabeth and go by liz. I hate it and always have. If I could change my name I would. I find liz sounds so unfeminine and harsh sounding. Yet going by Elizabeth sounds to formal.

PamDooveOrangeJoof · 02/01/2015 07:37

My best friend is Annabel and she is wonderful!
Strong, compassionate, kind, funny and intelligent.
She is also very beautiful.

Gooseysgirl · 02/01/2015 09:15

Don't know any Annabels or Arabellas... I know six Elizabeths, three are known as Liz, one as Lizzie and two as Libby.

avocadotoast · 02/01/2015 09:18

I know four (I think!) adult Elizabeths. Two are Lizzy and two are Liz. They're all very different to be honest!

ZebraGiraffe · 02/01/2015 14:01

Annabel - professional ballet dancer, tiny, very bright
Elizabeth - solicitor in family law, professional, ambitious
Arabella - very trendy, highly sociable, has very clever artsy children

ZebraGiraffe · 02/01/2015 14:02

For record I would pick Arabella - it is a lovely name and a bit different. Elizabeth will be shortened whether you want it to be or not.

98percentchocolate · 03/01/2015 15:43

Annabel - intelligent, polite, nice, very pretty, and elegant. Down to earth with it all too!

emeline · 03/01/2015 15:46

Arabella sounds a lot like Umbrella to me.
But I like the nn Ari, tis funky.

Babylove2015 · 03/01/2015 17:49

They all sound wonderful like wonderful people.

Elizabeth would be shortened to Eliza, Ellie, Libby or Lily. Not crazy about Liz myself. Though I do like Lizzie.

I like the prettiness of Annabel and Arabella more than them sounding posh lol. Thank you all for the replies. Love reading them :)

I was born in Coronation year and every third girl at my schools seemed to have the name Elizabeth as their first or middle name. One of my best friends at secondary school was a Liz.

Elizabeths don't have to be Liz/Lizzie, though. They can be be Bess/Bessie, Beth, Betsy (and the Welsh versions Bethan and Betsan), Bet/Betty/Bette, the American Buffy, Effy, Ellie, Elisa/Eliza, Lisa/Liza, Libby, the German Sissi and Liesel. I'm sure there are more.

In my daughter's generation (early twenties) there seemed to be a bit of a fashion for Annabel/Annabelle and Isabel/Isabelle (the 2nd being a variant of Elizabeth, of course).

dancingwitch · 03/01/2015 21:57

I know several Elizabeths, one who is known by her full name & the rest by diminutives. They vary hugely in character, job etc.
I know one Annabel. I have known her for years and never liked her as she is a bit try too hard and can be a complete bitch. I'm sure their not all like that.
I have known three Arabella's since I was 18. All blonde, all grew up with family wealth & went to well known private schools. One was incredibly intelligent & quite down to earth; another was ridiculously pathetic and annoying as she spent most of her time creating a fragile image thinking men would like it; the third was quite blokey and I was quite surprised to find out she now has a "naice" job. I have to say I do have an image in mind when I'm told i'm meeting an Arabella in a way I don't if meeting an Elizabeth.

ChickenMe · 03/01/2015 23:54

Two Annabels in my year at school (born mid-70s). I went to quite a posh school but not posh enough for any Arabellas!
I love Annabel-defo in my top 5. I
always think of Annabels as slim and attractive for some reason!

Thepurplegiraffe · 04/01/2015 08:02

My sister is called Annabel and is a beautiful, intelligent and fun person. My other sister has recently named my niece after her. It is such a versatile name as well.

Ellizardo · 05/01/2015 09:23

I'm an Elizabeth and love it. Get called a mix of things but always introduce myself as Elizabeth. I know a very feminine Annabel and no Arabellas - a bit twee for me!
