Meghan or Megan?

Finally had my baby girl and decided on megan. My hubby likes it spelt with the 'h' in. What do you think? Is there a point or will just cause her problems?

Are you in the UK? If so I think it's much more common without the H, and therefore she'll spend her whole life having to spell it.

I prefer it without, but I don't think it makes much difference other than a lifetime of reminding people that it has an h in it.

We have one without the h and I think it looks nicer that way.

It also means now she's 4 we can get her personalised items spelt correctly.

The h doesn't add anything, and will only cause her aggro in later life.

Without the H. It looks strange with it, as if you are supposed to pronounce it differently.

In Scotland Meghan is pronounced differently. It's said MEE GAN instead of Meg-an. I don't know about other parts of the country but where we are that's how I'd pronounce Meghan.

I'm Scottish and would say the Mee gan pronounciation is American and has nothing to do with how the name is spelt. I've heard Mee gan by Americans for Megan.
Never heard a Scot say anything other than Megan, regardless of spelling. I'm in the central lowlands so might be different elsewhere.

If she says "Meghan with an h" to people you can just guarantee that half of them will spell it Mehgan. Meh.

Megan is originally Welsh; a short form of Margaret. It's an English word, not a word from a Celtic language. Meg + affectionate suffix 'an'.

As earlier posters have said, the extra h does not add anything. I suspect it might first have been put there - maybe in USA - by people trying to add a Celtic 'flavour' to a name, in the same way that it's become fashionable for some people to add an h to the Scottish name Mairi, because they think it seems more Gaelic, without realising that, at least traditionally, it's gramatically incorrect. (There was a whole thread here on Mumsnet on Mairi/Mhairi just a few days ago.)

We missed off the "an" but had we wanted to use the longer name, would have used Megan.

Prefer Megan.

I came across a Meighan - I definitely wanted to say Mee-gan but she pronounced it normally as Megan - too confusing!
