We have our girl name sorted, but we need one for a boy. Not starting with a L or J, preferably a bit classical and not too 'English'.
I am happy with any suggestions, as we are really stuck!

Don't you just hate it when you find DH has an uncle Wheatabix he never told you about.

We know German/French/English boys named
Dominic
Quentin
Marcus
Thomas

Deerhound · 24/12/2014 22:55

Peter or David

fattycow · 25/12/2014 08:42

Peter and David are out due to close family with those names. I like Quentin! Alexander and Xavier are out as well, again due to people close to us with those names. Thomas is the name of my brother. Having big families isn't helpful. :P

The problem is even if the name exists in similar-ish forms in different countries, the connotations are different:

Alfredo in Italian is ver very posh and old-fashioned. Alfred in UK is working class (older generation of Alfs) or a bit twee (newer generation of Alfies. Nowt wrong with any of that, but if you want your kid to be called Alfie because you want to give him a friendly, approcheable name it'd be disconcerting to find that in Italian you'd named him something rather starchy.

Other way round - Francesco is a lot more normal than Francis, but you might not like the nicknames 'Checco' or 'Fra'.

Boy's names just don't travel. I don't know why.

fattycow · 27/12/2014 17:29

I am not going for a name that only works in Dutch, like Thijs. But I don't want anything that sounds 'foreign' either. I know, I'm being a pain in the arse. :P
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, as it might be the one that is perfect that I wouldn't have thought of myself. Smile

Victor, Alexander, David

FrancisdeSales · 30/12/2014 20:37

Gabriel
Michael
Sebastian
Paul/Paulo
Benedict
Loris (Italian but works well in English and German)
Lucas
Albert
Leo/Leon
Diego
Dominic

PennyJennyPie · 30/12/2014 20:52

DS is half Dutch. Our very short shortlist included Lucas and Theo, but he is called Anton which we are very happy with.

BikeRunSki · 30/12/2014 21:01

Marcus
Adam
Stephan
Louis

fattycow · 31/12/2014 08:29

Lucas is nice, but it is with an L and in the top 20 of popular names here.
Benedict is a pope name here.
Diego is too 'foreign' and forever associated with Dora.
I like Sebastiaan, but DH doesn't.
Loris will be misheard for Joris, and is with an L again.
I like Marc, not Marcus. But we know too many of them... As with Stefan.

Hmm, baby had better be a girl! :P

What about

Reuben
Jasper
Bart
Christian
Joseph
Stein
Richard
Jacob

fattycow · 07/01/2015 12:00

Jasper, Joseph and Jacob are out, due to starting with a J.
We have two Christiaans in the immediate family and a Ruben and two Richards as well.
Stijn would sound horrible with our surname.
So that leaves Bart, which neither of us likes...

And now DH had vetoed Tristan as well!

Martin.

Baby Martin sounds adorable Smile

Rhubarbgarden · 07/01/2015 12:25

Ds is Anglo-Dutch. We had a hard time finding names for the same reasons as you. We went with Gus, which works well. Middle name Antonius.

DahliaBloom · 07/01/2015 12:32

Noah?

fattycow · 07/01/2015 17:09

rhubarb, can I ask what other names you had on your list?

As to Noah, we have a girl named Noa in the immediate family, so another no...

OP posts:
Rhubarbgarden · 07/01/2015 18:44

Um, actually Gus ended up the only one on our shortlist! We quite liked Adam. I liked Edgar, Conrad and Tristan but DH wasn't keen. Good job we only have one ds!

urbinosparrot · 07/01/2015 22:58

Rafael/ Raphael ?

Henry ?

fattycow · 09/01/2015 15:16

I like Adam, will throw that at the DH.
Rafael is the name of our latest nephew.
Henri will sound really odd with our surname, but I do like it a lot!
