Irish granny chic names

Just wondering if any Irish posters reckon we will follow English example and start to revive the names our granny's generation had?
I just cannot imagine playgrounds being filled with little Nualas, Kathleens, Doloreses and Eithnes. Shock

I can't imagine a little Attracta or Concepta either.

Through work I came across a Perpetua last week.

treaclesoda · 19/12/2014 12:01

When I read the title, before I even read your first post, I was thinking 'Dolores'! Grin

MiscellaneousAssortment · 19/12/2014 12:04

I'm afraid I already know a little Nuala and a Dolores is definitely one that's going to get popular!

TheEagle · 19/12/2014 12:04

I'm sure Gobnait is due for a comeback. And Dympna Xmas Smile

Kathleen was on our list had DS been a DD. Smile

TheYuletideMovement · 19/12/2014 12:09

Bridie, Delia and Mary!

treaclesoda · 19/12/2014 12:10

I met a young Biddy recently. And she was very lovely.

Fallingovercliffs · 19/12/2014 12:15

Biddy reminds me of the Chalet School so I'll allow that one pass Smile.

But Gobnait, Dympna and Attracta Shock

Kathleen is fab, though, and I've come across quite a few of all ages through the years.

PrincessOfChina · 19/12/2014 12:21

I know a Bridie and a Nuala under five.

Fallingovercliffs · 19/12/2014 12:23

To the posters who know little Nualas, Bridies etc. are they in Ireland or the UK?

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 19/12/2014 12:26

I know a Nula. England.

myotherusernameisbetter · 19/12/2014 12:26

Deirdre?

myotherusernameisbetter · 19/12/2014 12:26

Theresa?

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 19/12/2014 12:26

Argh. Autocorrect not correct. Is Nula even a name?

Mrsmorton · 19/12/2014 12:30

How do you pronounce Gobnait?

KnockMeDown · 19/12/2014 12:31

What about Assumpta? That was a great one from BallyK Grin

MildDrPepperAddiction · 19/12/2014 12:33

How about little Bernie?

Eve · 19/12/2014 12:36

The baby girl name Gobnait is pronounced GAABNEYT

Fallingovercliffs · 19/12/2014 12:40

I don't think Deirdre really qualifies as old lady chic yet. It's more a 1960s/70s name than a granny one.

TheEponymousGrub · 19/12/2014 12:40

"Gub-Nitch" - I can't imagine anything sounding worse...in English. It's pretty okay in context (in Irish), but place it in the wrong language and it's like the ugly duckling.

But isn't Bridget already pretty acceptable now? And there's Caitlin - which should properly be pronounced Catch-leen and/or Anglicised to Kathleen.

Fallingovercliffs · 19/12/2014 12:41

Eve I've always heard it pronounced Gubnit, which I think is the ugliest name ever. It's Irish for Deborah apparently.

OP posts:
TheEponymousGrub · 19/12/2014 12:42

Eve...what?

TheEponymousGrub · 19/12/2014 12:43

Oh I know, I know - worse than Gobnait?

...drumnroll...

Gearoid, sloppily pronounced "growed"

yup
