DC2 is due in March. I am feeling a little uninspired regarding girls names this. Read a thread earlier about Sylvia and lots of posters mentioned Sylvie. DH has not dismissed it but did comment that we need to think of what it sounds like in a Scottish accent. We are both Scottish and live in Edinburgh. I don't think it's an issue but interested in thoughts.....

It's a gorgeous name! Very feminine and graceful I think. Sylvia is pretty too.

It's really nice, but I think Sylvia is maybe nicer.

I love the name, but it does sound a bit like 'Selfie', especially when said in a Scottish accent!

Sylvie is nice but Sylvia is even nicer and you can still have Sylvie as a nickname.

Thanks for your thoughts. Interestingly i am not overly keen on Sylvia. I will ask dh what his thoughts are when he gets home

I know it's the French version I just don't think it sounds as elegant as Sylvia. Plus someone said Sylvie is as fashionable in France as Brenda is here, that puts me off it.

I prefer it to Sylvia. But she'll be called Sylvia by loads of people anyway as they would be more used to that name.

Sylvia has a distinguished history - goes back to Roman times, although the Romans spelled it 'Silvia'. It has a lovely meaning which would be very appropriate for Scotland - it means 'lady of the trees/forests'.

I agree with Squoosh - Sylvie when used in the English language seems somehow diminished, when compared with Sylvia.

I really don't understand the mn obsession with Sylvie/Sylvia. All the ladies I know with that name (which is a lot) are all in their 60s. To me it's in the same league as Sandra, Pamela, Sue and, Brenda. Sorry, I'm being mean but I don't understand it(!)

I don't think there is an obsession, particularly---just that there happened to be a couple of threads recently.

I think it reminds people of Sophia/Sophie, which is why it feels a bit different to calling someone Brenda and Pamela.

I love Sylvie but weirdly don't like Sylvia. Sylvia is still very middle aged to me whereas Sylvie sounds more current. I have no idea what it would sound like in a Scottish accent though.

I have a Sylvie. I always get comments on how lovely her name is. I do really like Sylvia too and sometimes wonder if I should have named her that instead.

My sister lives up in Oban and I didn't notice it sounding weird with a Scottish accent.

I have a friend called Sylvia who is Scottish. Her name sounds lovely when she says it. I'm sure Sylvie will be the same.

They're both beautiful names.

I know many adult Sylvias & Sylvies. Because I only know older women with the name, I don't see it on a child & I don't actually like the name. There's been many threads where this name has been suggested & if the popularity of the name on here reflects its popularity in the real world, every other baby girl will have this name!

Mutteroo I've never met another Sylvie. There were only 98 registered Sylvie's in 2013 in the UK which is not many at all.

I started the Sylvia thread and hadn't realised there had been other threads on the name. To me it's a very very unusual name to give a small child nowadays - but I definitely wouldn't put it in the same category as Brenda, Pamela and Sandra. It has a much more classical, ethereal feel that those names.

Like Felix I also have a Sylvie and always get comments on how lovely her name is. I like Sylvia as well but dh really didn't. In fact Sylvie was the only girl name he liked - dc2 is currently in utero and is doomed if a girl!

I have an Edinburgh accent - it sounds fine to me - no "r" to roll and no "t" to drop - clearly perfect :o

I like it and I like Sylvia too.

I love Sylvie, our little boy would have been called it had he been a girl I think it would sound fine in a Scottish accent! X

I much prefer Sylvie to Sylvia.
