Blythe - how would you pronounce?

I was blithely assuming there was just one way, but my SIL just did something a bit different with it Confused

Does it end with a heavy/longish 'th' or a shortish/light one?

Longish "th"

Your sil didn't pronounce it bliff surely??

Its a lovely name - never heard it pronounced differently!

Hulababy · 14/12/2014 19:43

I would assume bl/igh/th (a short softer th sound as it is used in the word the)

thetooththewholetooth · 14/12/2014 19:45

To rhyme with lithe.

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 14/12/2014 19:46

Rhymes with tithe. I've never heard anyone use this name in RL though.

ArsenicStew · 14/12/2014 19:46

Yes, that's what I thought. Bit worried for a moment that I had it all wrong.

Thanks - maybe it's her accent.

Even better Smile

Bl-eye-th

The th would be the same as the one qt the end of clothe, so longish, longer than cloth.

I'm prob wrong though.

ArsenicStew · 14/12/2014 19:50

Hard to describe, but she almost made it rhyme with 'life'. So she made the 'th' so light it sounded close to 'blyfe'

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/12/2014 19:50

It's a lovely name, reminds me of Blythe Danner

Sunnyshine · 14/12/2014 19:50

In littlest pet shop the girl is called this and is pronounced bly-th. So the bly like fly with the th sound on the end.

Weekipper · 14/12/2014 19:51

It's my Dad's middle name and we pronounce it bl/igh/th, rhyming with lithe as pp said

ArsenicStew · 14/12/2014 19:51

Yes Pooka there needs to be some reverberation in the 'th; sound I think.

ChouetteMouette · 14/12/2014 20:06

It's my daughter's middle name and we also pronounce it to rhyme with lithe. Great name!

lecherslady · 14/12/2014 20:10

My daughter's best friend is a Blythe. She pronounces it Bly-ve.

Storytown · 14/12/2014 20:29

Ah, does your SIL suffer from Estaury English?! Any name here that should be pronounced "th" gets an F. Maffew, Roof, Faif, Blyfe

FrancisdeSales · 14/12/2014 21:45

I also wondered if your SIL was from sarf London.

ArsenicStew · 15/12/2014 07:06

Ha. No, not estuary english or sarf london. Really quite poshe.

ArsenicStew · 15/12/2014 07:09

I can 'hear' it in my head in an essex accent and SIL's rendering would make more sense that way. Maybe she has only ever met an Estuary Blythe?

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/12/2014 07:39

I pronounce like blithely without the ly.

arlagirl · 15/12/2014 08:00

I knew a boy in the sixties called Blyth without an e

TooMuchCantBreathe · 15/12/2014 09:03

Blythe to rhyme with life (but not changing the th to a f) is acceptable. I pronounce it both ways. In my head obviously, it's not one I use much Grin

pinkgirlythoughts · 15/12/2014 09:57

It's my maiden name, with a long 'th,' although I've also had people pronounce it with a short 'th,' as well as blyt (to rhyme with fight) and blyd (to rhyme with fried).

squoosh · 15/12/2014 10:56

Fine as a surname, don't like it as a first name. Quite masculine for a girl.

ArsenicStew · 15/12/2014 11:01

You think? I think it has quite a 30s/40s femininity to it, but a quite strong meaning.

...and the child that is born on the sabbath day is bonny and blythe and good and gay.

never heard it used as a name before. Love it!
