I like Rowan and Piper.

TempsPerdu · 14/12/2014 09:52

Rowan and Linnet both really lovely (although the latter risks possible confusion with Lynette). Quite like Arwen too (also Anwen).

Jemima is the only name I like from your list but the racial connotations in North America put me off from using it at the time.

TimefIies · 14/12/2014 10:21

We had a teacher called Linnet, who used to get called "old cock Linnet" after the old music hall song My Old Man - might depend how well known that song is in your area!

Jemima, Linnet and Lyra are my favourites. I love love love Linnet (another Green Knowe fan here), but I admit I would be worried about the shortening to Lin/Lyn/mishearing as Lynette (which I dislike).

Lyra is lovely.

Have you thought about Linnea? (Scandinavian, pron Linn-aya). I know a little Linnea (though again it does get shortened to Lin/Linnie).

Bowlersarm · 14/12/2014 10:37

Jemima.

I like a lot of these!

I'd say my favourite is Rowan.

manicinsomniac · 14/12/2014 15:53

Piper - like it a lot. Cool and quirky. Unusual
Jemima - really like it but disagree that it's unusual. I teach 4.
Rowan - quite like it
Linnet - it's ok
Kira - like it
Arwen - like it
Alannah - like it
Eira - not sure about this
Lyra - really like it
Mia - not keen

Piper, Jemima or Lyra would be my picks.

Gugglebum · 15/12/2014 04:09

Kira/Ciara
Arwen
Jemima
Those are my top picks. :)

CaulkheadUpNorth · 15/12/2014 04:15

Alannah.

SoftSheen · 15/12/2014 04:27

Jemima.

Linnet is also nice but I would worry about it being confused with Lynette.

Bobby1234 · 15/12/2014 06:52

Piper is best by far x

I'm writing down my gut reaction to these ...

Piper - vision in head of a man in tights being followed by many rats.

Linnet - for someone unaware of the literary connection it sounds like a type of tree.

Alannah/Kira - a bit chavvy.

Lyra/Mia - both nice but I know a couple of each if you're going for unusual.

Jemima - I love it. I've only ever known one (in her 40s now) - as soon as she hit 12ish she insisted on being known as Jemma though.

Rowan - like it, sounds cool as a girls name. Know a couple of boy Rowans but no girls.

Arwen - indifferent to this one!
