Esra for a girl

Hi I would like opinions on the name Esra for a girl? It is a beautiful girls name in Turkey but is it to close to the boys Hebrew name Ezra?

Isn't it pronounced exactly the same?

I like it. As you say, it is a lovely Turkish girls name and if you are of Turkish heritage I would definitely use it.

Otherwise, not so sure. It is very close to Ezra which I think is probably more widely known. You would probably spend your life spelling it and saying "no, ES-ra not Ezzz-ra".

Generally I think Turkish girls names are underused, I love Elif too.

scrambled, no it is pronounced as above, a shorter harder S rather than ez. Like reading the letter S, IYSWIM.

There is one in my DD's class (not Turkish origin FWIW, Pakistani origin family).

I know a little Ezra & it is often mistaken for a girls name apparently, people don't seem very familiar with it these days. I love it (for a boy, personally).

Yes thats whats making me unsure of using it, will i always be correcting people. Elif is beautiful but we have a niece called Elif. Any other suggestions on turkish girls names? Thanks for the replies.

I still think Esra is lovely, it just depends how bothered you are about people occasionally getting it wrong. If you live in a diverse area where lots of children have names from other parts of the world, most people are used to checking spelling and pronunciation. And let's face it, even the most traditional English names have a variety of spellings that need to be checked/corrected!

i like Seda, Zeynep, Eda (but that's probably too easily mistaken for the English spelling Ada). Sibel too, but again you would come up against pronunciation issues with people using the English pronunciation of Sybil. I also really like Nur but only with a Turkish surname, I think it is a bit plain without.

I still think Esra is the nicest of all of these though
