I think it would be fine so long as she turns out to look like a Bond Girl.

If it's the 'Hen' nn you want Henrietta might be kinder?

Henley??? God no. It's not a name, and if it was, it would be for a boy.

A place (on Thames) and a socially-exclusive regatta.

Just why, when there are so many lovely real girls' names out there?

And I know I keep saying this, but we cannot control nicknames. After (say) the first three years of life, they evolve over time or are given by siblings/classmates/friends/work colleagues etc. Often they have nothing to do with given names.

And they are not compulsory. I'm always known by my given name, not a nickname. Not a conscious choice, it just happened. And I know many other adults who also use their given names. In fact, thinking of a random circle of about 100 friends and neighbours, I can only think of five people who are always called by a nickname.

I saw the thread title & assumed it was for a boy.

As a name it sounds like someone who can't say Henry.

I don't see it as a girl's name at all.

If you absolutely had to use it, then only for a boy. It doesn't sound like a girl's name at all.

I think of Henley regatta and also of the US name for a style of t-shirt with buttons down the front.

And I don't like "Hennie" as a nickname. "Hen" is the Scottish equivalent of "chuck". When old ladies called us "hen" we used to mutter:
If I'm a hen
Then you're a duck
I lay eggs
And you lay muck.

a) regatta
b) if it's a name, sounds like a boys one
c) she'll get a lifetime of post addressed to 'Henry'
d) people will think you've done the early noughties thing of naming your child after the place they were concieved.

Henrietta is a very pretty name that will give the nickname 'Hennie' if you want.

No, just no. I live in Henley - it is lovely- but it really isn't a suitable name for a boy or a girl.

Just up the road from Maidenhead, which would also make an unsuitable girls' name...

Not wild about place names as names for people. And this one just makes me think 'regatta'

It's a place name or a style of tshirt. You and she will be asked if she was conceived there, 'sorry did you say Henry' and you'll be back here when she's a pre-school moaning that people keep calling her the wrong name.

Colleague at work recently named her baby girl this. I've liked it since, but it's not getting any love on here.
