I met a gorgeous little girl called Ashley the other day and she has made me fall in love with the name.
Any thoughts? The unisex thing worries me.

I thought the boys were fighting to claim this one back? How about Aisling (pronounced ASH-ling) instead? Scottish and Irish Gaelic for "dream", and definitely not used for boys!

WowserBowser · 24/11/2014 13:47

I have relatives called Ashleigh and Charleigh!

I would go for Ashley and not worry about it being unisex.

Aelfrida · 24/11/2014 13:54

Awful I didn't word that very well, sorry! I mean I don't normally like unisex names as I like feminine sounding girls names. I think Ashley is quite feminine though so not sure what I'm waffling about! Confused Smile

I always though Ashley was the typical male spelling, and Ashleigh the female.

Aelfrida · 24/11/2014 14:03

I'd heard that too, Leeds2.

I've never met a female Ashley in the UK but understand it is a pretty standard girls name in the U.S.

Much prefer the Ashley spelling. Ashleigh is an unnecessary change.

Theonlyoneiknow · 25/11/2014 11:14

I know it's a different name but what about Ailsa ?

SilverShadows · 25/11/2014 11:44

The female Ash's that I know spell it Ashli and Ashlee. Combine the 2 and have Ashlie?

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 25/11/2014 11:57

I have a female cousin called Ashleigh Rose (she's early 20's so way before the current trend for using Rose as a middle name!). I've always thought it's really pretty.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 25/11/2014 12:02

Ashley is a small village in Gloucestershire.

Its a boys name to me. Always will be. If you must call a girl Ashley then use Ashleigh.

Mrsjayy · 26/11/2014 14:28

I think Ashley for a boy is dying out I like it is a nice name think it is Ashleigh for a girl

baskingseals · 27/11/2014 07:08

I like Ashleigh for a girl.

cherrybombxo · 27/11/2014 13:31

I've always seen the name as a bit chavvy, but I think that's because I knew two at school and another (my second cousin) who were all a bit rough and scary Grin

vomistheworst · 27/11/2014 16:35

I love the name Ashley, but for a boy.

I like Aisling for a girl, like someone else mentioned.

thecaroline · 28/11/2014 14:05

I think Ashley is very dated and not very tasteful. Ashleigh is even worse.

AdorableAbbie · 28/11/2014 15:20

Ashley for girl
Eisley for boy

ChickenMe · 28/11/2014 15:38

I see Ashley as a boy's name and, while its an attractive sound, the -Leigh ending IMO is dated.

I have a name which has male and female versions. The short version is unisex. Eg like Chris but not. People always assume male and it's annoying.

DanyStormborn · 29/11/2014 21:00

I live a Ashley (that spelling) for a girl. To me it's a girls name.

weeblueberry · 29/11/2014 21:51

My friend is called Ashleigh and she said about 95% of the time people spell it wrong so she has to spell it out every single time she gives her name.

Lunastarfish · 29/11/2014 22:12

I think Ashley is pretty and not very common now. I grew up with a few born in the 80s (boys and girls). I think Ashley is more masculine, Ashleigh is more feminine
