It's a short form of Auberon, and in Europe would (usually) be a boy.

slippermaiden · 23/11/2014 21:38

I absolutely love it..... For a large grey cat! Not a persons name at all for me Smile

AuntieStella · 23/11/2014 21:38

"But prefer Bree as a name."

So do I, but I'd spell it Breagh.

Kellymn · 23/11/2014 21:54

I personally like it, recognise it from 'Pitch Perfect'. Although, I think it's more popular in the US, while we are more likely to have Audrey. Also I would use it for a girl as based on the fact that it sounds like Audrey it does sound a bit too girly for a boy.

calzone · 23/11/2014 21:54

Gosh, no!!

Sunbeam18 · 23/11/2014 21:59

Dog's name

sunflower49 · 23/11/2014 22:09

I think I would like it if the only person (yes, a man, It's not a girl's name traditionally) I knew with it was a similar sort of character as described upthread. But replace the smoking jacket with yellow waistcoat... :)

HairdresserHairdresser · 23/11/2014 22:17

I always thought it was a girls name, only heard it from teen mom, girl called Aubrey.

MissHJ · 23/11/2014 22:18

Aubree was the name we had chosen if our son would have been a girl. Love it, we have a michael instead but I would consider Aubree again.

WittyUsername102 · 24/11/2014 07:22

I prefer the spelling Aubrie, but Aubrey is just as cute.. I just can't imagine it on a boy.

lalalemon · 24/11/2014 07:32

Awful name!

It's an old mans name! My cousin and his mrs named their daughter this and then gave her an ridiculous middle name to boot! Poor kid!

Headgone · 24/11/2014 07:35

I know an older gentleman with the name. It's awful! Definitely not a baby's/child's name.

florascotia · 24/11/2014 11:58

It's traditionally a male name: Aubrey Beardsley or Auberon Waugh. Or (as earlier poster said) Oberon King of the Fairies in 'Midsummer Night's Dream'.

English version of Alberich. He was rather fierce character in German mythology with later unpleasant associations, or so it is alleged: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberich

People may feel that the modern use of Aubrey has left all this behind, however.

Chennai · 24/11/2014 12:01

I've never heard Aubrey used for a girl until this thread.

The only Aubrey I know is an elderly man.

squoosh · 24/11/2014 13:12

I have the same associations as NorbertDentressangle, it's the name of a purple nosed, cravat wearing luvvie.

It's not a girls name. Anyone who names their daughter Aubrey is a ninny.

HairdresserHairdresser · 24/11/2014 13:15

I must be in the minority, I only see it as a girls name, and a little girls name at that, not an "old mans name". Which surely most of the current naming trends are old ladies names anyway?

WittyUsername102 · 24/11/2014 15:41

I am the same HairdresserHairdresser. I have never met any boys with the name, only girls.

NadiaWadia · 24/11/2014 17:57

What's wrong with Audrey? No ambiguity there!

AnguaResurgam · 24/11/2014 18:33

"What's wrong with Audrey?"

Major downside in UK is the long-running character in Corrie.

NadiaWadia · 24/11/2014 18:46

Oh well I don't watch Corrie. I would think of Audrey Hepburn.

SilentAllTheseYears · 24/11/2014 18:47

I know a male Aubrey, his brother is Marmaduke.

TheAlias · 24/11/2014 18:58

I've only ever heard it as a boy's name and then only used by very posh parents who want to make it very clear how posh they/their child is. Grin

rosierelala · 24/11/2014 19:00

My former neighbour in leafy muswell hill was named Aubrey. A tall good looking rasta. Think idris elba type. He used to 'steal' my cat when I was at work and feed her
cheese. cat always came home
chilled smelling of the 'herb'. Very cool guy. I think of it as a fab edgy masculine name.

nooka · 25/11/2014 03:52

Boys name to me, feels quite masculine and wrong for a girl.

xXjunebugXx · 25/11/2014 18:39

I really like it, it sounds so much more of a girls name to me tbh. I LOVE Elliott for a girl and using it. I also really like Ellis and Avery....all names are unisex. If you like it for a girl go for it, it's very pretty.
