Prefer Milo, Malo reminds me of marshmallows

JakeyBurd · 22/11/2014 20:53

I like it. Very old, but pleasantly different. Go for it!

sejt · 22/11/2014 20:55

Estas loco?

NotTodaySatan · 22/11/2014 20:55

Muy muy malo.

No.

AuntieStella · 22/11/2014 20:55

I know it's a saint, but my first (and quite strong) association was the ferry.

DramaAlpaca · 22/11/2014 20:58

Not good, sorry. I wouldn't know whether to pronounce it MAH-lo or MAY-lo. And yes, it means 'bad' in Spanish.

Milo is fine.

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 22/11/2014 21:01

Milo is a popular chocolate drink in the Far East!

squoosh · 22/11/2014 21:15

Reminds me Saint-Malo the lovely walled town in France.

I quite like it to be honest.

CaptainAnkles · 22/11/2014 21:16

No, es muy malo.

ClashCityRocker · 22/11/2014 21:17

I'd worry it would get shortened to Mal.

JakeyBurd · 22/11/2014 21:36

Does the Spanish meaning matter? Unless the OP plans to live in a Spanish-speaking country then few will make such a connection.

sejt · 22/11/2014 21:39

I'd say it does yes.

Everybody knows un poco de espanol

Even if you don't know spanish, it's the start of malignant, malevolent, malady etc.... 'mal' feels like bad even without a word of spanish surely?

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 22/11/2014 21:40

Malo
I would rather be
Malo
in an apple tree
Malo
than a naughty boy
Malo
in adversity

It's a memorable one if you've ever learned Latin, or watched The Turn of the Screw.

JakeyBurd · 22/11/2014 21:58

I suppose it depends how your mind works sejt! I know Spanish but I didn't make the association until it was brought up.

I'm sure that parents who chose other names starting with Mal, e.g. Malcolm, didn't feel they had a bad vibe. Although saying that, there aren't that many names starting with MAL, are there? Time to encourage some, perhaps? Smile

IHateHelloKitty · 22/11/2014 21:59

I like it but I do not think it will work well outside Brittany.. Maybe try Maël instead?

Gruntbaby · 22/11/2014 22:15

There's quite a few in France.

GreatAuntDinah · 23/11/2014 11:14

We considered it for DS as DH is Breton but decided against because of the. Spanish thing.

GreatAuntDinah · 23/11/2014 11:16

And you get Milo hot choc all over Africa too!

MyOwnJungle · 23/11/2014 11:27

5 mentions of the spanish thing on a thread with 19 messages

akalancelot · 23/11/2014 11:55

Thanks everyone - I was aware of the spanish translation.

Back to the drawing board :)
