What do you think of Aileen?

What do you think of Aileen as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.
Anyone out there with the name Aileen? We are considering this name for our baby, but don`t know if other children / people might make fun of this name for some reason?

Is it pronounce ay-leen or eye-leen? I'm not keen on either to be honest, but ay-leen is preferable.

I know a couple so it's not my name but a dear friend's called Aileen. Or Ails for short, which has stuck with her. We grew up in a small town in Scotland where there were one or two in each year at school.

When she was younger, yes she'd need to point out it wasn't Alien to silly wee boys, but don't let that put you off!! What name can't be abbreviated, or what can't people be teased about.

I did notice at her wedding a few weeks ago that it sounds a bit more like Eileen when pronounced with an English accent.

I like Eilidh actually (saw on here some pronunciation that it's like Hayley without the H!) which you might like too.

I think 50-something Australian lady, sorry. too much neighbours in my youth, or was it home and away?

Prefer Eileen to Aileen but can't see any reason not to use Aileen if you like it.

I think it's a lovely name. Quite a few in the 30 something age group round here ( Ireland)

To me Aileen (ay-leen) seems dated but maybe it's due a comeback?

How about Aisling (ash-leen) or I second Eilidh.

I know one, she's at university now and is a lovely person (she's not my daughter BTW!)

Old lady name

It's quite a nice name, much nicer than Eileen, but quite dated. As previous posters have said, Eilidh would be lovely instead.

Or how about Aideen (AY-deen) as an alternative?

I'm in Ireland and I don't know any Aileens under 40, but I know two Aideens who are under 10.

A colleague at work is Aileen and people ALWAYS say Eileen. She's only early thirties but I think it's an old fashioned name and not in a good vintage way. It's never really grown on me since I've known her.

I know loads of Aileen's. There was at least 2 in each class at school. I've not heard anyone under 30 named it in a long time. I don't like it really.
