What do you think of Aileen as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.
Anyone out there with the name Aileen? We are considering this name for our baby, but don`t know if other children / people might make fun of this name for some reason?

Is it pronounce ay-leen or eye-leen? I'm not keen on either to be honest, but ay-leen is preferable.

Foxbiscuitselection · 08/11/2014 20:34

Prefer Kathleen or Alison

Foxbiscuitselection · 08/11/2014 20:35

Alice that meant to say

TobyLerone · 08/11/2014 20:35

It's fine, but quite old-fashioned.

Hi

I know a couple so it's not my name but a dear friend's called Aileen. Or Ails for short, which has stuck with her. We grew up in a small town in Scotland where there were one or two in each year at school.

When she was younger, yes she'd need to point out it wasn't Alien to silly wee boys, but don't let that put you off!! What name can't be abbreviated, or what can't people be teased about.

I did notice at her wedding a few weeks ago that it sounds a bit more like Eileen when pronounced with an English accent.

I like Eilidh actually (saw on here some pronunciation that it's like Hayley without the H!) which you might like too.

zoemaguire · 08/11/2014 20:36

I think 50-something Australian lady, sorry. too much neighbours in my youth, or was it home and away?

zoemaguire · 08/11/2014 20:37

Eilidh is lovely though!

Doilooklikeatourist · 08/11/2014 20:40

I know an elderly lady with the name Aline ( like Alan , but line not lan )
I like Aileen , I think it's unusual , and pretty

loislines · 08/11/2014 20:40

Prefer Eileen to Aileen but can't see any reason not to use Aileen if you like it.

SwedishEdith · 08/11/2014 20:42

I think it's horrible, sorry. And I know some lovely ones.

Ediemccreedy · 08/11/2014 20:51

I think it's a lovely name. Quite a few in the 30 something age group round here ( Ireland)

ehwhat · 08/11/2014 20:54

Reminds me of "Come on Eileen"

dontblameme · 08/11/2014 20:56

To me Aileen (ay-leen) seems dated but maybe it's due a comeback?

How about Aisling (ash-leen) or I second Eilidh.

SilentAllTheseYears · 08/11/2014 20:57

I know one, she's at university now and is a lovely person (she's not my daughter BTW!)

Smukogrig · 08/11/2014 20:57

Old lady name

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2014 21:00

It's quite a nice name, much nicer than Eileen, but quite dated. As previous posters have said, Eilidh would be lovely instead.

Or how about Aideen (AY-deen) as an alternative?

I'm in Ireland and I don't know any Aileens under 40, but I know two Aideens who are under 10.

squoosh · 08/11/2014 22:00

I know loads of Aileens. Good people.

Shame they have such an awful name,

SirChenjin · 08/11/2014 22:03

It's a very common popular name for women in their fifties up here in Scotland - don't really like it tbh.

Sophronia · 08/11/2014 22:33

Don't like. It reminds me of Aileen Wuornos.

ashtrayheart · 08/11/2014 22:35

Me too!

Seasidedolly · 09/11/2014 20:17

A colleague at work is Aileen and people ALWAYS say Eileen. She's only early thirties but I think it's an old fashioned name and not in a good vintage way. It's never really grown on me since I've known her.

MrsBungle · 09/11/2014 20:19

I know loads of Aileen's. There was at least 2 in each class at school. I've not heard anyone under 30 named it in a long time. I don't like it really.

Clawdy · 09/11/2014 21:06

Ailsa is prettier.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 09/11/2014 21:21

Serial killer. Sorry.

eachtigertires · 10/11/2014 03:21

Knew a nun called Sister Aileen. Was forever called Sister Alien by myself and my brother as kids...
