Sidney... too much of a girls' name now?

I really like Sidney as a possible for DC2, due next week, also like Sid as a nickname. My only worry is that Sydney is now so accepted as a female name that people (other children particularly) will think he has a 'girly' name. Usually spelled differently I know, but still sounds the same shouted across a playground.

How many male/female Sidney/Sydneys do you know?

I have never met a female Sidney. Or known of one through friends etc.

My DD has Sidney as her middle name after her grandad but I know 2 other little Sidneys and they are both boys so I think it can work for both, especially if you are going to call him Sid

There was a female Sidney at my secondary school - she would probably be about to collect her bus pass now!

Molotov · 08/11/2014 16:59

Sidney is a boy's name. Sydney is a girl's name. So Sidney is not too girly at all.

It's the same as Leslie/Lesley; Robin/Robyn, etc.

FWIW, I think Sidney is a great name for a boy.

I have only met and known boy Sidney's, know of girls of course though. I prefer it for a boy. A good friend if mine has a son with this name but mostly calls him Sid.

Hmm, good to know people do know male Sidneys! I'm a teacher, and the only ones I've ever come across are girls- usually spelled Sydney, but occasionally Sidney. Makes me feel much more positive about using the name!

I thought Sidonie was the usual spelling for a girl's name? Like Frances/Francis?

I know a forty-something Sidonie but several younger, male Sidneys.

twinjocks · 11/11/2014 17:00

Lovely name, and especially with Sid for short.

sanilee · 11/11/2014 17:55

Only ever come across female Sidneys (spelled Sydney) except for Tom Sawyer of course. I'm in the States though, so take that for what it is worth.

tammytoby · 12/11/2014 14:48

Great boys name imo!

manicinsomniac · 13/11/2014 17:07

I teach a female Sydney but would definitely think of Sidney as a boy.

Smugfearnleyshittingstool · 13/11/2014 17:14

Love sidney, will probably use it for next dc born in June, if he's a boy:)

TsukuruTazaki · 13/11/2014 17:21

I have never met a girl Sidney. I would definitely assume Sidney was a boy - goes with the old man names that are around at the mo, Alfie, Stanley et all.

roastpots · 13/11/2014 20:47

I think of it as a boy's name too.

ChickenMe · 15/11/2014 21:34

Love Sid. It was my Grandads name.

iwanttobeadragonthisyear · 16/11/2014 00:15

Its a boys name IMO

Castlemilk · 16/11/2014 11:16

Yup, Sidney is a boy's name! Know one under ten.

Sydney is the female version, and I don't know any. Lovely though.

JakeyBurd · 16/11/2014 22:07

Know of a girl with this name, only the "creative" parents spelt it Cydni. I can't help thinking of her as kidney...

mathanxiety · 17/11/2014 06:30

I know only girls named Sydney, and I know several.
My dad had a lovely friend named Sidney but I know none under age 80something.
I would say based on that, that Sydney is more of a girl name and Sidneys are unusual.
