We are having a girl and I'm finding names difficult. I have come up with this first name and middle name. Do you like it? Our last name begins with L and is one syllable. We would call her Josie for short.

Is it perhaps a regional thing Costa? I'm from Glasgow and "not tonight Josephine" is a regular saying too generally meaning "I can't be arsed" :o

I would like to add also that I do think its a bit daft when people pick a name based on a nn that they like. A friend of mine was born Carys because her parents liked Carrie as a nn and she was forever correcting teachers, co-workers and bosses etc that she was only Carys on paper and Carrie was the only name she would answer to.

Name your child whatever you want to call them, you can't really control what other people shorten it too in future

Very nice. Also not often heard.

Legionofboom · 07/11/2014 10:54

Josephine is an absoultely beautiful name with lots of great nickname options. Cara is pretty too and flows well.

It's a shame that the two people here who have the name both dislike it, fwiw the only person I know with the name loves it.

DanyStormborn · 07/11/2014 13:19

Thanks for all the replies. Good feedback on the whole :) A bit concerned the actual Josephines don't seem to like it. But I do know a lot of people with my first name who don't like it but I'm happy with it.

Costacoffeeplease I've never heard the not tonight thing. I've known one older Josephine and she's never mentioned it. Might ask people round here if that jumps to mind.

Foxbiscuitsselection I love the name Katherine but don't like it with Josephine as they end in similar sounds. I prefer a middle name that is totally different sounding. Not keen on Tess and one syllable names don't go well with our short last name. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I wouldn't worry Dany - I've got a very popular name and I hate it, hence my kids have more unusual names. If you love it, go for it.

Just tested the 'not tonight, Josephine' with my Josie and she's never heard of it! Yet.... :-)

ScooseIsLoose · 07/11/2014 17:06

I'm also a Josephine and had all the it tonight Josephine etc but it really doesn't bother me and I get called Josie by most people if you like the name go for it Grin

ScooseIsLoose · 07/11/2014 17:07

I'm actually a Josephine Catherine I think they go well together Grin

CormoranStrike · 07/11/2014 21:08

Wonderful choice, I think Josephine is lovely.

Costacoffeeplease · 07/11/2014 21:09

I think Josie is even worse, if that's possible, and I can't believe so many people have never heard of 'not tonight Josephine'

*Not tonight Joséphine

This is the supposed response by Napoleon Bonaparte when declining sex with Empress Joséphine.*

Hideous, just hideous

ScooseIsLoose · 07/11/2014 21:28

Say what you really think Costa Hmm I like the name Josephine

It's my name. I'm Joni for short. I found admitting the full name a bit embarrassing when I was younger - dunno why, it just seemed a bit long and flowery. But now I'm an adult I like it, and I use my full name professionally.

I have never heard of "not tonight Josephine", don't think anyone has ever said it to me. And I wouldn't have known what they were talking about if theydid. Every day's a school day on here.

Costacoffeeplease · 07/11/2014 22:21

I usually do scoose Smile and the question was posed 'do you like it?'

And I hate it

ScooseIsLoose · 07/11/2014 22:36

We know

Costacoffeeplease · 08/11/2014 05:25

Good. Job done

Foxbiscuitselection · 08/11/2014 07:53

I think she will be well placed name wise with her peers since there is such a revival of traditional names. If she's in a class with violet, Madeleine and Florence I can't see it being an issue.

TheOldestCat · 08/11/2014 13:02

I've heard of it, Costacoffeeplease; I just chose not to let it bother me.

And DD, nearly 8, has never encountered the quote.

Sorry you don't like your name. What about changing it? Don't go for Sarah though (my name) - no notable quotes but overused as hell!

WrappedInABlankie · 08/11/2014 13:44

Have to agree with the fact as a child I found it embarrassing and wished I was called something normal like Katie all the way through preschool until I moved and shortened it to Jo in high school. Use to get the quotes as well it was tiresome people thought they were being funny Hmm

My middle name is Clarissa as well so kind of like Your choice

Costacoffeeplease · 09/11/2014 15:26

Thankfully it's only my middle name, although I live in a country where you're expected to use all your names on residence permits etc, so I have to use it more frequently than if I was still in the UK Angry
