Asher as a boy's name?

fionadal · 29/10/2014 13:28

Hi, I have recently met 2 baby Ashers! Never heard the name before, but it really appeals to me. Looked it up and it's a Biblical name, one of Joseph's brothers.

What are people's reactions to it? Different but too different?

We have an Asher, my granddad is an Asher as well. We wanted a Jewish/Hebrew name, and I like the nickname Ash. Great name, imo, but I'm biased.

FamiliesShareGerms · 29/10/2014 22:34

Won't it get misspelt as Usher?

HomeHelpMeGawd · 29/10/2014 22:35

We have an Asher. We love it, he loves it, his friends like it (and don't take the mickey). Our Jewish friends tend to think of it as a very Jewish name, which is fine by us, as we are Jewish#. Our non-Jewish friends don't tend to think of it in that light.

It has connotations of a particular type of Jewishness, too: my super religious family would never name a child Asher (they go for names like Yehoshua or Brochi instead...) and many less religious think it's too biblical and too unusual and prefer David or Daniel etc. but it suits him and us very well. A Limmud name, if you will

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 29/10/2014 22:36

Why would it? They sound totally different. Confused

SwedishEdith · 29/10/2014 22:40

I'd only dislike the Ash nickname because people might assume it was then either Ashley or Ashton - which I don't like.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 29/10/2014 22:44

Swedish- sorry, if you were answering me I was asking familiessharegerms on Asher/Usher.Smile

feetheart · 29/10/2014 22:45

I really like it but then I have an Ash (or 'just-Ash' as he was known for a while until people got used to the fact that it wasn't a shortened version of anything :))

RandomFriend · 29/10/2014 22:49

Asher - lovely name. I considered using it 20 years ago, but didn't.

SwedishEdith · 29/10/2014 22:54

No, it's Ok penguins - I knew what you meant. Just wanted to make clear I don't dislike Ash just the other names it could be short for Smile

It makes me think of Asscher diamonds. It's no bad thing as they are my favourite cut of diamond.

Here is a pickky Smile

I loved it but DH not having any of it. We know far too many Ashers!

MsCoconut · 29/10/2014 23:54

I know an Indian man named Achal. I thought his name was Asher until I saw him on Facebook. Confused

I like how Asher is one of the lesser known biblical names but doesn't sound completely out there. I liken it to Jude and Jesse.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 29/10/2014 23:59

I have never heard of it as a girl's name, only a boy's. I was very keen on it but DH wouldn't have it.

happybubblebrain · 30/10/2014 00:05

I really like the name, but I do know one Asher who is about my age and is a complete idiot and has a personality very similar to Robbie Williams so that makes me like it a little bit less.

MrsJonSnow · 30/10/2014 01:09

I know a few male Ashers. Love it!!

Asha is more common than Asher and they sound identical (at least they do in my accent) I can see how there could be some confusion.

In the UK Asher (male) is FAR more popular than Asha (female)

MummyBeerest · 30/10/2014 01:13

Love it!

birdofthenorth · 30/10/2014 15:56

Lovely and defo a boy. I think Joseph's brothers are a great start for a baby name shortlist!

cherrybombxo · 30/10/2014 17:40

Travis Barker from blink-182 has a son whose middle name is Asher. I'd never heard it before that and never met anyone called Asher since, but I love it! The kid's first name is Landon, which I also like but is very American. It just makes me think of Saaaf Laaandan Grin

BlueStarsAtNight · 30/10/2014 17:50

I'll buck the trend and say I'm not a big fan. I don't know any myself, but I'd lump it in with Ashton and Ashley, neither of which I like.

fukkigucci · 30/10/2014 17:53

DH is an Asher. Pronounced Usher. It's never been shortened to ash.

OliviaBlue · 30/10/2014 18:29

I don't like it - it reminds me of a British song - Brimful of Asha. He says it like Asher though.

Sorry, but no.
