Molly.....

I guess many of you will look at this thread and think Molly.... overused, faddy, part of the trend, won't age well etc. And a few weeks ago if you'd have asked my opinion I would have been inclined to agree with you. BUT.....
I don't know if many of you have seen the programme "Our Girl" on BBC 1, the lead character played by Lacey Turner was called Molly. She was a strong character, and although only a TV programme the name really suited her. It didn't seem young, childish or trendy.
I am currently expecting my first baby, a girl and am seriously considering the name MOLLY FLORENCE for her after watching this as I have fallen in love with the name.
Would just like to hear your thoughts......
Many thanks.

I like it.

I had a great aunt called Molly. She was a farmer and could fix a tractor with one hand while having her other arm inside a cow's nethers. She was great.

I definitely associate it with strong women.

SnoringNorma · 24/10/2014 01:10

My grandmother was known as Molly. She was glamorous quick witted and strong. There are now 2 young Molly on either side of the family. I think it's strong and pretty.

Great name. My grandmother was Molly too and I thought about it for a girl but I know too many in our social circle who have used it recently unfortunately...

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 04:51

I know an adult Molly. She's v smart, a scientist and a savvy switched on woman. Her name does not suit her at all and I feel silly every time I have to say it (so I avoid saying it). Hmm
Her sophistication only serves to highlight the tweeness of her name.

rachel234 · 24/10/2014 07:21

Personally I don't find Molly very attractive at all. There are far more elegant and pretty girls names imo.

avocadotoast · 24/10/2014 08:58

I really like it. My mum used to childmind a little girl called Molly so that's who I always think of (and she was great, really headstrong and confident!). I'd consider it myself but someone at work who I sit next to has a daughter called Molly so I don't know if it's a bit close Confused

squoosh · 24/10/2014 09:19

Her name does not suit her at all and I feel silly every time I have to say it (so I avoid saying it).

Well you certainly sound silly. You might want to try growing up.

I think Molly is lovely and Molly Florence is just gorgeous!

Irishkez · 24/10/2014 10:22

Molly Florence is just lovely! Great choice!

hlc123 · 24/10/2014 10:49

Love Molly, it is top of our shortlist

Elizadoesdolittle · 24/10/2014 11:51

I love it. Molly would be on my short list but I have a DSis with a name that rhymes with Molly so unsure. We are very close and see each other a lot so could get a bit silly with rhyming names.

Also love Florence but DH has vetoed that one Angry

MiddletonPink · 24/10/2014 15:34

Agree with Rachel234. It's not a pretty name imo.

Prefer Millie.

Hulababy · 24/10/2014 15:40

My dd is called Mollie; she's 12. And it really suits her. She's a smart, independent, funny and caring girl growing into a lovely young woman. It's not too cutesy at all. I am biased, I like it.

The name Mollie (and Molly) has been used as a name in it's own right for many years; it appears on birth records from early 1900s and beyond, not just as a pet form of Mary and Margaret.

And for all it's so called popularity dd was the only one we knew at primary school and at secondary there is only one other we know of.

DecaffTastesWeird · 24/10/2014 15:56

I like Molly and it can be a strong name. The "unsinkable" Molly Brown springs to mind. It is quite commonly used IME though. But if that doesn't put you off then go for it!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 25/10/2014 19:08

I have a Molly. Named after Molly in ghost. Don't even particularly like the film!.
I actually don't like the name (Molly) now though, but it's always suited dd and is a very pretty name that wont bring her any problems so yes I think you should go with it.,

Wordsaremything · 25/10/2014 22:35

Reminds me of Millie Mollie Mandy I'm afraid

Hulababy · 26/10/2014 07:30

I wouldn't say the book Milly Molly Mandy is something is actively avoid anyway though - it's not a negative connection.

The Molly name in the book is short for Margaret.

HamAndPlaques · 26/10/2014 07:38

It's been popular for a while - I teach a KS3 class with three Mollies in it.

Molly Florence is very of the moment, and will probably date her as a 2010s baby, but that's not necessarily a problem.

Yama · 26/10/2014 07:47

I like it. I had a very posh Great Aunt named Molly so to me it brings to mind elegance.

Yama · 26/10/2014 07:49

And I loved Milly Molly Mandy.

BreeVDKamp · 26/10/2014 07:57

My grandmother's middle name :) she is ace, v glam and was a great businesswoman (now in her 80s!).

Slang for MDMA - not a big deal in my opinion but if you're considering the name I thought I'd mention it!

burgatroyd · 26/10/2014 08:27

I know one adult Molly and I love it as a name

DaffodilField · 26/10/2014 08:48

It is a nice name but just feels like it should be short for something. In Milly Molly Mandy it is short for Margaret.

Purplehonesty · 26/10/2014 08:58

I love it. We have a Molly Kate and yes when I watched our girl I loved her character despite it taking ages to click that her name was the same as dd!

Molly Florence is a really great name.

I met an American 20 something Molly many years ago, she was so sweet and lovely and her name suited her perfectly.

So to me its a pretty name which works well for any age. Go for it!
