Hi all,
My son is now 3 weeks old and we're still really struggling on a name, the ones we've knuckled down to are Rufus and Joseph, if he's Rufus then would be Rufus Henry James and if Joseph then would be Joseph William George, It's so hard and don't want to choose the wrong one and regret it. He really does suit both names, Our other son is called Monty so want something that will go with it too.
Advice needed please.

Rufus goes lovely with monty !!

squoosh · 23/10/2014 16:05

Rufus goes well with Monty, they sound like a posh pair of brothers.

Joseph/Joe sounds more like the name of Monty's valet.

Squirm · 23/10/2014 16:49

Rufus

minipie · 23/10/2014 17:15

Rufus definitely

Sophronia · 23/10/2014 17:33

LynetteScavo · 23/10/2014 22:21

Well, I was going to say Rufus, before reading the OP!

Rufus Henry James is a very fine name indeed. Smile

Rufus or Rafe

marshy123 · 24/10/2014 07:28

It's so difficult as love both names, don't want to avoid using a name just because people might think we're being posh either! We're not posh by the way

There is another reason we're torn as already know quite a few Josephs in montys preschool too and I really don't like the shortening to Joe or Joey wereas don't mind Rufus shortened to Rufi.

Does Rufus really come across as being so 'posh' and upper class?

What on earth would be wrong with having 'posh' names? People make their name, not the other way round imo.

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 08:38

Are you English Rachel?

Wanting to avoid looking like you're trying to be posh is actually quite a big deal to a large proportion of English people. In the complex web of class signifiers and markers that litter English social interactions, trying to sound posh definitely drops you down a few notches on the ladder.
If you're working class it can be seen as a rejection of your background.

If you are English then I guess you know all this anyway and so I don't understand your question.

SurfsUp1 · 24/10/2014 08:39

OP, you know what a Rufi is don't you?

marshy123 · 24/10/2014 09:10

Rufie or Rufi - oh my word I've Google It and had no idea it was a nick name for a date rape drug!
This decision gets worse
I agree it is important to not try to 'appear' to be posher than you are, we are not ' posh' but are not working class either, both my husband and myself are a hard working couple, If anything in the past I have been almost bullied for being well spoken (we live in an area that has an accent which I don't have and I don't call people duck!) Do I understand this theory fully.

Julian?

DannyShouldHaveChosenRizzo · 24/10/2014 09:17

Definitely Rufus!
Brilliant name, goes very well with Monty.
I don't think they sound posh at all, more cool than posh.

Rufus definitely! I stupidly named a pet that I got when childless that I still have so couldn't use it for ds. Thou dh wouldn't have been up for it. It would go brilliantly with ds's name if we have another ds.

LittleBairn · 24/10/2014 10:53

I can't see many children using Rufi for a boy, so Rufus would be fine.

myotherusernameisbetter · 24/10/2014 11:23

Archie - that is definitely less posh than Rufus but goes well.

or Rory or Miles.

I really like Joseph but not sure it goes as well with Monty.
